Fighting Tigers win thriller in snowy Wise, Va.

Box Score Who needs a two-minute offense, when you have a 40-second offense? Campbellsville University and the University of Virginia College at Wise combined for 17 points in the final 1:40 of the game Saturday and nearly made it 20, but UVA-Wise missed a field goal as time expired to give Campbellsville a 45-42 Mid-South Conference East Division win on the road.

With snow piled in the end zones of Carl Smith Stadium and temperatures below freezing Saturday, it didn't keep both teams' offenses from heating up in the final two minutes of what had been a tale of two halves game.

Campbellsville opened the game hoping to establish its running game, and did just that, as the Tigers collected 348 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. Three of the scores on the ground came from Mark Terry in the first half, as CU built a 35-14 halftime lead.

Terry, who rushed for 122 yards for a career-high average of 12.2 yards per carry, scored on runs of 2, 3 and 1 yards for the Tigers' first three touchdowns. His three scores make him only the fourth Tiger to rush for three touchdowns in a game twice in the same season. He had three at Union College on Sept. 4, 2010.

After Terry's first touchdown, Wise answered with a 29-yard touchdown pass from Hunter Hoke to Broderick Gager to even the score, 7-7 in the first quarter. The Tigers ran wild after that though, scoring the next three on the ground.

Holding a 21-7 lead, Gerwan Brewer got into the action with a 76-yard scamper to stretch the lead, 28-7, with 3:23 left in the half. Wise began to show life offensively as it attempted to cut the lead back to two scores with a short run by Stew Robinson, however the Tigers caught a break late in the half to maintain their 21-point lead at the half.

Just as Wise looked to kill the Tigers' closing drive of the first half, a partially blocked punt by Rex Coleman was recovered by long snapper McKale High after the ball bounced off the leg of a Cavalier player. One play later, Robert Hill found Harold Small for his 10th touchdown reception of the season and the team's 21st touchdown catch - breaking the single season record for most touchdown passes and catches by a Tiger team.

But just like in 2009, Wise was not going to slip away. Last year, the Cavaliers hung 18 on the Tigers in the third quarter to win 32-31 at Finley Stadium after a David Hon field goal was partially blocked and fell short in the closing seconds.

This year, Wise scored 21 unanswered points in the third quarter to tie the game, 35-35.

After a fourth quarter of stalled drives, Wayne Coffee helped spark the Tiger offense late. Coffee, who posted his first 100-yard game of the season with 124 yards, ran for a combined 52 yards on four plays to move the Tigers into UVA-Wise territory. Brewer put CU in field goal range, setting up a 22-yard field goal for Hon.

The junior from Orange Park, Fla., nailed the kick to give Campbellsville a 38-35 lead with 1:40 left to play. But before you could say the word "redemption," Wise was back in the Tiger end zone after a 48-yard pass from Hoke to Dom Simmons. The touchdown gave the Cavs their first lead of the game.

With one minute remaining in the game, Calvin Bini took the kickoff from Wise and returned it 31 yards to Campbellsville's 41. After Hill was sacked for a 9-yard loss, he found Brewer on an athletic, 68-yard game-winning touchdown catch. Brewer caught the ball and was jarred by a defender before spinning free and racing to the end zone for the score. With Hon's extra point, the Tigers took a 45-42 lead with 41 seconds left to play. Brewer finished the game with 244 all-purpose yards, while Hill had 240.

Wise pushed the ball to the Tiger 27, but a 44-yard field goal try by Paul Melshen missed wide and short as time expired, giving Campbellsville its second straight thriller win of the season.

The win secures the Tigers' second consecutive winning season for the first time since 2003 and 2004.

With one game remaining in the regular season, Campbellsville hopes to gain a shot to play North Greenville University (S.C.) in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Victory Bowl, Nov. 20. The NGU Crusaders, ranked No. 1 in the NCCAA standings, will likely host the NCCAA championship game after finishing the regular season with an 8-3 record Saturday after beating UNC-Pembroke, 27-10. Campbellsville is third in the Victory Bowl standings behind Greenville College (Ill.), which finished its season Saturday with a 7-3 record and six-game win streak. For the Tigers to make the Victory Bowl, they will need to win their final regular season game Nov. 13 and need Greenville to receive an at large bid in Pool B of the NCAA D3 Playoffs on Selection Sunday, Nov. 14.

Campbellsville (6-4) travels to West Virginia University Tech to close the regular season Saturday, Nov. 13. Kickoff is 1:30 p.m.

The game will be broadcast live in Central Kentucky on K-Country 105.7 FM and online at KCountry1057.com.

QUOTES
Head Coach Perry Thomas
On the second half attitude
"I thought at times we felt some negative energy coming out, but we had some guys step up and put the fire out on that."

On the victory
"This is a huge win. Not only does it put us at 4-1 in the conference and advances us to some kind of postseason, but it also gets a monkey off our back. Wise is one of the few teams we hadn't beaten in a while. This is another step for us, another hurdle we're over. Now we need to go regroup and get ready for Tech."

On back-to-back winning seasons
"That's what you want to get to. You hear me rant and people may thing we're disappointed. We're not. We're very proud of our guys and proud of them developing that tradition back of having winning football. Starting points have to happen somewhere, and we're getting more consistent. Our expectations are so high, we want more, and I think all competitors in any walk of life, whether it's your business or whatever, you want more and you want the best. That's our goal, and that's what I rant about. But at the same time, I'm very proud of where our entire program has come -- the facilities, the attitude, the staffing, how our guys are playing and learning to win and compete. I'm very proud of that, because 6-4 now with an opportunity to go 7-4 is a lot better than being at 4-6 and an opportunity to go 4-7. We want more and we want to get to the point where the fans want more, where you look back at the end of a 7-4 year and say, 'It was a a good year, but we want that great year.'"

On West Virginia Tech
"We're going to see a team that has some good backs that can run. They have one of the top quarterbacks in the conference that's started for them since he was a freshman. He's a junior now. They're going to throw the ball all over the field and have a couple of speedy, transfer receivers that are exceptional. They play a good defense that you don't see very often. They typically line up in a 4-4 type of look. They're going to move people everywhere. It'll be unorthodox and will take a little preparation."
