Shawnee State derailed aspirations of CU's volleyball team for a
Mid-South Conference tournament title by defeating the Tigers Monday
night in Frankfort, 20-25, 19-25, 19-25.
Campbellsville could not stand prosperity, blowing four- and three-point leads in the first and second sets as the Bears rallied to win both. In the third set, CU fought back to tie the score at 15-15 on a
Monica Chernichan kill, but Shawnee scored three straight points and the Tigers had a hole too deep for which to dig out.
Shawnee's MSC Player of the Year, Jami Turrill, led all players with 18 kills and her teammates held a 14-6 advantage in blocks. Campbellsville actually had a 42-37 kill advantage, but made mistakes at critical moments in the match, making it easy for the Bears to close out the match.
Campbellsville wrapped up its season (barring a bid to the NCCAA tournament) with a 26-10 record. Shawnee, which lost to Campbellsville in five sets on Oct. 2, is 33-10 and was to play the winner of the Rio Grande-Georgetown match, which began at 8:00 Monday night, for the MSC Tournament crown. That match will be at 2:00 Tuesday.
Chernichan led Campbellsville with 15 kills, followed by
Shannon Cahill (10) and
Samantha James (9).
Caroline Martin had 38 assists and 21 digs.
Audrey Sanders and
Genevieve Collette had 20 and 14 digs, respectively.
