Tigers launch early 3s, fall short at Life

Box Score MARIETTA, Ga. -- Campbellsville University was out shot at the free throw line Saturday, as Life University connected nine more freebies than the Tigers in an 87-79 loss in non-conference play.

CU launched 3-pointer after 3-pointer early and shot 44 percent from the floor, but struggled at the free thrown line, hitting only 14-of-28 attempts, while Life was unstoppable on free shots (23-of-30).

The Tigers connected on seven 3-pointers in the first half, led by a nine-point hot streak from Adrian Whelan off the bench. The senior from Brandenburg, Ky., hit a trio of unanswered 3s inside the 11 minute mark of the first half to give Campbellsville a 16-15 lead and stretch it to the Tigers’ highest of the night at 22-15. Fellow senior Brett Crittenden (Tribune, Kan.) had a pair of first-half 3s, including one to tie the game for the first time, 13-13. Crittenden finished with a career-high 22 points.

Life rallied back from Whelan’s shooting to regain a 27-26 lead, but JaVaughn Espritt regained a brief CU lead, 28-27, with his first field goal of the night at the 5:06 mark in the half. It was the last lead of the game though for the Tigers.

After Life took control of the scoreboard, Crittenden hit a basket to pull within a point at the half, 36-35, but the Eagles opened the second period with a pair of free throws from James Hooper and never looked back. Life went on to lead by as many as 11 points, 52-41, with 15 minutes left to play. Campbellsville pulled within three points, 70-67, with four minutes left, but Life shooters were 10-of-11 from the free throw line the rest of the way to help secure the win.

Shawn Savage joined Crittenden as the leading 3-point shooter on the team with five. He had 18 points, while Espritt posted a double-double, 15 points and 12 rebounds. Caleb Harris led all players with seven assists.

Tony Reese led Life with 23 points, including a pair of 3s and 11-of-11 shooting at the line. Hooper followed with 19 points.

Campbellsville (7-4, 1-1 MSC) returns to Mid-South Conference action Thursday on the road at the University of Rio Grande. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. EST. Bryan Blair will call the action on K-Country 105.7 FM in Central Kentucky and online at KCountry1057.com.
