KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- With first-place already clinched in Pool B of the National Christian College
Athletic Association (NCCAA) Volleyball Tournament, Campbellsville University
slipped up against second-seed Mount Vernon Nazarene University in three sets.
The rematch of last year's NCCAA Division I Volleyball championship match went
exactly opposite, as the Cougars won straight sets 25-21, 25-15 and 25-22. The
win snapped a 10 match win streak for CU in NCCAA National Tournaments, dating
back to the 2008 semifinals.
Campbellsville fell behind in the first set and was never able to recover, as
CU dropped its first set in the tournament.
After MVNU won the second set, Campbellsville jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the
third set, looking to mount a comeback. However, MVNU quickly responded to
force an 8-8 tie. Shannon Cahill regained the lead for CU at 15-14 with an ace,
but the Cougars kept the final set close. With Campbellsville leading 21-20,
the Mount Vernon took the lead for good on three straight attack errors by the
Lady Tigers.
Jackie Albrecht led the Cougars with 22 kills, including the one to pull MVNU
to match point, and Haley Nofziger put the match away with her second kill of
the match.
Campbellsville's only double-figure attacker was Genevieve Collette, who had 12
kills to follow her 17 in the morning win against Southeastern University. The
Lady Tigers struggled offensively as a response to their woes on defense, turning
31 attack errors into MVNU points and only collecting two CU points off blocks.
Audrey Sanders led the CU defense with 21 digs, followed by Caroline Martin's
17 digs and 14 from Shannon Cahill, who also had three aces. Martin had 29 set
assists.
Following the match, CU head coach Amy Eckenfels stressed to her team that a
loss at this point could be a good thing, as the coaching staff stressed the
miscues and discussed with the team where to move forward as it enters the
NCCAA National Tournament semifinals Saturday.
CU (33-11) will meet Palm Beach Atlantic University in the second semifinal
match at 12 p.m. ET. Indiana Wesleyan University will play Trinity Christian
College in the first semifinal at 10 a.m. The championship match will be played
at 3 p.m.
