With the 8th-rated Lady Tigers taking on the 7-14 (1-3 MSC) St.
Catharine Lady Patriots, one would presume a mismatch in Monday's
Mid-South Conference make-up game in the Powell Athletic Center.
If you presumed that you would have been right.
Courtney Danis led an
early onslaught, helping Campbellsville University build a 30-16 cushion en route
to a 112-52 win. It was the 21st win in 22 outings for the Lady Tigers,
who also host West Virginia Tech on Thursday and Georgetown on Saturday
before going on the road to Pikeville and Rio Grande.
Campbellsville moved up one in the national polls after defeating
University of the Cumberlands on the road last Thursday and caught St.
Catharine at a bad time. The Lady Patriots had five players battling
various injuries and did not dress.
"We had a lot of positives," said coach
Ginger Colvin. "It's so nice for everyone to be involved in the game for a good amount of time."
So, with SCC with only six players at its disposal the Lady Tigers played a variety of combinations and all of them seemed to work. Eleven players reached the scoring column in the first half and everyone on the roster scored during the game. Eight for 15 shooting from beyond the arc in the first half was a big reason for the breakaway win.
Corin Dunn scored 12 points as a reserve, and her fellow reserves punched up 57 points with everyone playing 10-plus minutes. The Lady Tigers were led in scoring by
Melly Heaton's 17 points.
Shabree Hunter was the rebound leader with 10 and
Keisha Compton dished out eight assists.
"St. Catharine played extremely hard considering they were hampered with injuries," said Colvin. "This being is a three-game week, the even amount of time for everyone was good to see."
Campbellsville blistered the nets at 61 percent in the first half and ended the game 48-of-86 for 55.8 percent. They out-rebounded the smaller Lady Patriots 61-28, dished out 29 assists but committed for 17 turnovers.
