"Wendi and Melly do a great job finding each other. They're
normally not on the floor at the same time, but we decided to start Wendi
tonight and that gave us a little more offensively," Colvin said. "When you put
those two on the floor together, and your other three are Whitney (Ballinger),
Courtney Danis and T.J. Thomas, there's not many ways to double anyone."
Similar to the first meeting of the year, Pikeville came out firing early, but
this time Campbellsville was unable to separate itself in the first 20 minutes.
CU took its first lead five minutes into the game, 12-10, on a layup by
Ballinger, but the Lady Bears worked the score even five more times before the
break. The Lady Tigers stretched its lead out to 11 points, 34-23, with about
seven minutes left in the opening period, but Pikeville closed the half on a
15-3 run. A Heaton 3-pointer with one second remaining in the half gave
CU a 41-38 halftime lead.
"We know we're going to get everybody's best. They shot the ball extremely
well," Colvin said. "We just didn't make
stops defensively (in the first half)."
In the second half, Colvin believes the Lady Tigers depth allowed
the separation, as all 14 CU players saw the court with nine playing more than
14 minutes each. Pikeville spread its time between 10 players.
"Midway through the second half, I think it began to wear on the, and we were
able to attack a little more," Colvin said. "We shot the ball well and really
opened it up, but we still have some things to work on."
Pikeville kept the game within one possession early in the
second half, but Heaton and Danis hit back-to-back 3's to stretch the
lead out to seven, 51-44, at the 17 minute mark. Two minutes later, Heaton
popped another 3-pointer to stretch the lead back to double-figures, 59-48. The
largest lead of the second half was 24 points, 81-57, with five minutes left.
CU took advantage of its extra opportunities, scoring 17 points off offensive
rebounds, while Pikeville only had three second-chance points.
Ballinger, who scored her 1,000th career point Saturday, blocked her
200th shot of her career. She's the second Lady Tiger to reach 200
blocks, following former CU star Andrea Deaton, and is the first women's basketball player
to ever reach the milestone in the Mid-South Conference.
With the win, the Lady Tigers gained a little distance in
the MSC standings as Georgetown College beat University of the Cumberlands,
65-59, to give CU a two-game lead with five games remaining.
"It's a great cushion and looks good on paper, but when the ball is tipped,
there's still a lot of basketball to be played," Colvin said.
CU (25-1) carries its 18-game win streak to the University of Rio Grande on Saturday for a 2 p.m.
game.
