In a season full of firsts, the Lady Tigers were stalking yet another at home on Thursday night.
Campbellsville swept Lindsey Wilson during the regular season for the
first time since 2003, 58-50, and ran its record to 26-1, 11-0 MSC.
The win helped the Lady Tigers maintain a two-game lead in the conference with three games to play.
"I thought Lindsey Wilson (16-10, 5-6 MSC) did a really good job
defending us early," said coach
Ginger Colvin. "It was probably the
best we've been defended all season."
But it was a pedestrian effort on the part of the Lady Tigers who shot just 33 percent and were out-rebounded 39-32. Trailing by as many as 11 in the first half and eight in the second, Campbellsville had to pull off a 19-5 run over a seven-minute span of the last half to gain control. CU went from 39-31 down to 50-44 up with six minutes to go in the game.
During that stretch
Whitney Ballinger and
Courtney Danis scored five points each. Danis' bucket at the 2:30 minute mark of the first half, jumped three players that were tied for 16th on the Lady Tigers' all-time scoring (1,365 points) list. Danis surpassed Shannon Wathan, Christi Thomas and Franseda Gunn. Her 14 points put her at 1,374 points, 47 out of 15th place held by Angie Anderson.
"I think what turned it around for us was that we changed the tempo, started pressing," said Colvin. "We didn't get a ton out of our press but amped up the tempo and I think that got them out of their comfort zone. Until then they had the game going at the speed they wanted"
The Lady Tigers, who had been getting consistent offense from behind the arc from
Melly Heaton and
Wendi Messer, struggled from long range. CU hit just 2 of 16 from three in the first half, but a trio of bombs in the second half helped turn the momentum. Messer, who had 18 3s in her last seven games, had three but it took her 14 shots to get them.
Campbellsville hit 33 percent of it's field goals for the game after a 24 percent effort in the first half. The Lady Tigers were 2 of 16 from beyond the arc in the first (20 percent) half, but hit four big ones in the second to finish 6 for 29.
Messer, Danis and Heaton all hit 3s during a three-minute span that aided in the long run.
Lindsey's Victoria Krell led all scorers witb 16. Campbellsville had three players in double figures, Messer with 15 and Ballinger and Danis with 14 each. Ballinger completed a double-double witha team-high 10 boards. Krell had 14 for the Lady Blue Raiders.
The Lady Tigers did control their mistakes and only turned the ball over 13 times to Lindsey's 17.
Campbellsville travels to St. Catharine on Saturday for a 2 p.m. matchup with the Lady Patriots and host University of the Cumberlands next Thursday for Senior Night.
