Lady Tigers finish conference play 14-0 with 60-49 win at W. Va. Tech

Campbellsville equaled the most wins (29) during any Lady Tiger season by defeating West Virginia Tech 60-49 Saturday afternoon in Montgomery, W.Va. The win also punctuated a perfect Mid-South Conference slate, something no conference team has ever done, and sends CU into MSC Tourney play on Thursday at 14-0 against conference opposition.

"I didn't know that. That's awesome," said coach Ginger Colvin about the undefeated conference mark, "because I'm not in a very good mood right now."

But that was the only punctuation, at least during the first half, as Tech attempted to soil the Lady Tigers' unblemished conference mark on a day when in the first half they couldn't throw one in the ocean.

Campbellsville shot 27 percent in the first half (1-14 from 3) and trailed the Lady Golden Bears 26-23 at intermission. West Virginia Tech led by 10 (20-10) with five minutes to go in the half. The Lady Tigers went on an 13-2 run and actually led 23-22 when Corin Dunn hit a bucket. But that was the last points of the half for CU.

Campbellsville turned it around a little in the second half, improving it's shooting to 32 percent. And it didn't hurt any that Whitney Ballinger, who led the team with 11 points at intermission, rattled home three 3s six minutes into the second half. The Lady Tigers hit eight 3s in the second half.

"Whit went on a little 3-point tear and the rest of the girls shot it a little better too," said Colvin. "That was good, because I don't think we played with a sense of urgency today."

Colvin said the long bus ride and sitting around after an emotional win over Cumberlands may have played a role in that.

"We did finally knock down a few shots in the second half. Wendi cam in and got hot late."

It was 16-4 run that turned a 33-all tie into a 49-37 lead. tech closed to within five with 1:25 left in the game, but Messer sealed the win with two 3s in the last minute and a half.

Ballinger posted her 19th double-double of the season with 25 points and 12 rebounds and was followed in double figures by Wendi Messer 12 second-half points. Shyla Jones led Tech with 13 points.

Campbellsville will play Tech in the opening round of the MSC tournament when they matchup again at 10 a.m. Thursday.
