Campbellsville's Lady Tigers were supposed to make short work of the
team with the worst record in the Mid-South Conference, but it didn't
necessarily happen that way. Campbellsville 22-1 (7-0 MSC) did manage
to pulled away in the second half for a 87-52 win over West Virginia
Tech (9-13, 0-7).
It was the second consecutive game where coach
Ginger Colvin was able
to utilize her bench, but it wasn't anything like the 112-52 win on
Monday over St. Catharine. Her team takes on Georgetown on Saturday at
2:00.
"It's tough facing a team that is 0-6 in the conference and with Georgetown coming in here on Saturday," said Colvin. "I think it's human nature to be a little flat."
The Lady Tigers couldn't seem to shake the Lady Golden Bears. Leading by as many as 12 in the first half, Tech's Style Harper completed a three-point play with 20 second to go before intermission and had her team within nine, 39-30.
Melly Heaton, who hit 3 of 5 threes in the half, canned her third three seconds before the buzzer and the Lady Tigers led at the break 42-30.
"I'd have loved to have seen us with more energy and intensity, but in the end we got it done," said Colvin.
Campbellsville finally got its game together in half two and ballooned a 51-33 lead to 64-37 when Wendy Messer hit a 3 with 13 minutes to go in the game.
Colvin said she was hoping her squad would have done a better job rebounding and contesting shots. It trailed Tech at half in the rebounding category and ended up winning the glass by three.
Campbellsville hit 48 percent of its shots from the field and 13-21 from the free throw line. It was 10-27 from three and led the rebounding battle 46-43.
Whitney Ballinger led her team with 22 points and 17 boards. Heaton had 17 points and a team-high 4 assists
