From the early moments of the first half, down to the final point, Campbellsville
University used team work to reach two individual honors and a 95-78 win over
long-time rival Georgetown College.
The first of two accolades came with 2:33 left in the second half, as Barbourville native
Wendi Messer drained her eighth 3-pointer to tie the school record for
3-pointers in a game. She finished with a season-high 28 points. The second was
the first of three milestones to come in the next week for junior post player Whitney
Ballinger, as she scored career point 1,000 on a free throw with 1:09 to play.
"It's nice to see Whitney get 1,000 at home and Wendi's record,"
CU head coach
Ginger Colvin said. "(Wendi's) eighth 3-pointer came off an assist from
Melly Heaton, who also holds the record. Melly passed up an open three and hit Wendi with it. That sums up our team - completely unselfish."
The Lady Tigers worked to find Messer in the final minute, but both of her late 3-point attempts were contested and off the mark.
"I'm not so sure I'm not glad it happened that way," Colvin said. "I'm proud to have both of them at eight. Now they can gun for each other."
Ballinger entered the week needing 70 points for 1,000. After scoring 14 in limited time in a 112-52 win over St. Catharine College on Monday, she put up 22 against West Virginia Tech Thursday, but that still left her needing 34 in a tough battle of Top 30 teams.
"Ah, she'll get it against Georgetown," Colvin said with confidence after the Tech game.
Ballinger scored 16 in the second half to pass the 30-point plateau for the sixth time this season and move into CU's 1,000-point club. She is the second active Lady Tiger to reach 1,000, as teammate
Courtney Danis now has 1,349 career points.
CU opened the game with five-straight points, but it took more than 10 minutes
for the Lady Tigers to break its lead into double-figures.
"I thought there were times we could have blown it open and they came
back. They've played extremely well lately," Colvin said of Georgetown.
"Their post stepped out and hit some shots we didn't expect them to
hit."
CU built the lead to 21 points, 48-27, with less than five minutes to
play in the opening period before entering the half up, 54-38.
CU (23-1, 8-0 MSC) will travel to Pikeville College on Thursday for a 6 p.m. tip. Georgetown (14-9, 5-3 MSC) will host the University of the Cumberlands with a chance to move back into second place in the conference.
