Tiger softball kept the pressure on in the Mid-South Conference race,
sweeping Rio Grande on Saturday in Ohio and maintaining a one-game lead over Lindsey Wilson. Campbellsville won the first
game 9-0 in run-rule fashion and came back to win game two by an 8-7
count with a dramatic grand slam home run by
Alex Jane Clemmons in the
top of the seventh inning.
The Tigers (20-12, 9-2 MSC) won the series three games to one. Allison
Horton allowed only four hits in the first game. She pitched all four
games in the series for the Tigers.
Campbellsville collected 10 hits in defeating sophomore Anna Smith in
game one.
Morgan Bullock was a big factor for the Tigers, going 3-for-3
with a double and three runs scored.
Emma Napier,
Jordan Cornett and Clemmons tallied two RBI each.
Kacie Vincent had two hits, scored twice and knocked in a run.
The Tigers scored a run in the second inning on a sacrifice fly from
Katelyn Daniel and then erupted for five runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth.
In the fourth, Bullock doubled with one out and scored when Clemmons hit a two-bagger to left center.Daniel was hit by a pitch and Napier advanced the runners with a single. Cornett scored two runs with a single and Napier scored on the throw.
In the fifth, Bullock singled and was plated by Clemmons' triple. With two outs, and Horton on second, Vincent singled and Napier doubled to deep center
Horton (13-8) struck out two and walked one in limiting the RedStorm to four singles.
Game two showed signs that it was going to be more of the same as Campbellsville opened up a 4-0 lead, scoring in each of the first three innings. Napier quickly gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead with a lead-off home run. In the two-run second, Clemmons, who had walked and was advanced to third by Horton's double, scored on a passed ball. Daniel walked and stole second. Finally Dillender's single plated the second run of the frame. In the third
Jennifer England scored on Horton's single.
Rio was able to get on the board in the bottom of the third frame when senior leftfielder Leah Hamman led off the inning with a solo home run.
Rio scored six times in the fourth inning to take a 7-4 lead, thanks to five hits and three Campbellsville errors. The Tigers committed five errors in the game.
Rio booked nine hits in game two.
After a productive first three innings, Campbellsville's bats went a little cold and Rio owned a 7-4 lead going into the top of the seventh inning. After giving up two hits and a walk, Rio Grande's head coach changed pitchers.
Clemmons came through for Campbellsville as she hit the first pitch over the left field fence for a grand slam home run with
Nicole Bohanon, England and Bullock aboard, giving the Tigers an 8-7 lead.
Horton won the game for Campbellsville, pitching all seven innings, striking out two and walking one. She gave up nine hits and seven runs (one earned).
Campbellsville goes out of conference Tuesday for a two-game set at Midway and stays on the road Wednesday for a twin bill at Brescia.
