Lady Tigers roll into MSC semis with 80-55 win

Campbellsville rolled into the semi-finals of the Mid-South Conference Tournament Thursday morning, drubbing West Virginia Tech 80-55, a team they struggled against Saturday on the road.

The Lady Tigers used a 14-2 run to slip away from the Lady Golden Bears by 25-7 with 12 minutes gone in the first half. The Lady Tigers went on to take a 42-16 advantage at the break. CU opened the game with three 3-pointers in the first six minutes.

"Offensively that's the best that we've played in a while," said coach Ginger Colvin. "I think Cumberlands was our overall best game."

Colvin said her game plan played out to perfection and reversed a problem her squad had at Tech in the last game of the regular season.

"To the credit of the girls, we put in a 1-3-1 zone one day just to try and get the ball out of their point guard's hands," said Colvin. "They have an All-American post player and I think she got a little frustrated."

After losing it's shooting eye from three in the last five games of the season, the Lady Tigers canned 7 of 18 from 3, outscoring Tech by 15 from behind the arc. The Lady Tigers had been averaging eight threes a game, but Colvin was pleased with the stat line. They shot 42 percent overall for the game and 80 percent from the free throw line.

Courtney Danis' nine points pushed her past Angie Anderson in the all-time Lady Tiger scoring list with 1,404 points and only 18 away from surpassing her coach in 14th place.

Whitney Ballinger led the team in scoring with 15 points and a game-high eight boards, Wendi Messer joined her in double figures with 10. Megan Isaacs had four rebounds and Melly Heaton a like number of assists. As a team, the Lady Tiger out-rebounded Tech 35-27. Tech ends it's season at 10-20.

"We came in here and got our feet wet, hit some shots and shook loose some cobwebs. I'd much rather play an opening round game than to sit.

""Nobody played more than 23 minutes and they were 23 good minutes."

The win gave CU 30 (30-1) wins for the first time in program history. They will meet the winner of the Lindsey Wilson-Rio Grande game at 2:00 Friday afternoon.

Campbellsville's pressure was unrelenting in the game, but particularly so in the second half while they pushed the Lady Golden Bears on their heels. Tech was forced into 15 first-half turnovers and 29 for the game.

Everyone got involved in the game for CU, as everyone who dressed collected minutes.
