Softball sweep of Pikeville puts Tigers back in MSC lead

Campbellsville pounded out 23 hits in a double-header softball sweep of Pikeville on Saturday and moved to 26-14 (14-4 MSC) and regained the conference lead by one game over Lindsey Wilson. It sets up a pivotal two-game matchup on Tuesday with the Blue Raiders in Columbia.

In the first game, the Tigers had three leadoff home runs, punctuated by a third frame where Jennifer England led off the inning with a homer and then bounced another off the Community Center in left-centerfield. England had four RBI with her two taters and winning pitcher Allison Horton helped her own cause with two homers and a double and three RBI.

Campbellsville never trailed in the game, taking leads of 1-0 and 3-1 before erupting for an eight-spot in the third.

Bailey Dillender had an RBI-double in the first, scoring Emma Napier who had walked. In the second, Horton led off with a homer. Jordan Cornett plated Emma Napier who reached third on a error when her fly ball to right was misplayed.

In the third, CU banged out eight hits. England had two homers and Alex Jane Clemmons, Cornett and Dillender singles. Horton, Napier and Katie Daniels all had doubles as the run carousel just kept rotating.

Horton led off the fourth with her second homer and set up the run-rule game even though Pikeville pushed across a run in the top of the fifth.

Leslie Hasting relieved Horton in the fifth and gave up a lead-off home run, but also booked two strike outs and coaxed a pop out.

Campbellsville wasn't near as pure in the second game as the Tigers committed four errors and needed a perfect strike from center-fielder England to catcher Kacie Vincent to quell a Pikeville rally in the top of the sixth. Pikeville had already scored two runs and had two on and two out when England picked up a ground-ball single and fired it home, nailing a Bear runner.

The Tigers never trailed in the game after a four-run first when five singles by Cornett, England, Clemmons (RBI), Bullock (2 RBI) and Horton (RBI) led to all the scoring.

Campbellsville added a run in the second when Napier scored Vincent who had also hit safely and then stole second. In the third, CU took a 7-0 lead on Horton's RBI single. She later scored on Katie Daniels'  ground ball. CU's final run came in the fourth when Napier scored on an overthrow subsequent to Stephanie Weathers' sacrifice bunt.

Casidy Kroeker, who pitched the first five innings, got the win. She left the game with an 8-2 lead while allowing five hits and striking out two.

Tuesday's game in Columbia are scheduled for 5 and 7 p.m. eastern daylight time.
