Campbellsville University men's track and field team finished
fifth at the Centre College Invitational on Saturday, and second among NAIA
institutions behind the University of the Cumberlands.
The Tigers tied Bellarmine University for the meet lead early in the day, but
slipped into seventh place entering the final event. Freshman Chris
Brown of Pelham, Ala., brought home a second-place finish in the javelin throw
with a distance of 47.37 meters to give CU its final eight points and a
fifth-place team finish. The second-place finish was the best individual score
of the day for the CU men.
Campbellsville's lead early in the day came with CU scoring 20 of its 59 team
points in the first three races.
The Tigers' first points of the meet came in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, as
California junior Armando Pina placed fourth in the event with a time of
11:12.2 and Dashan Craft placed seventh in 11:30. CU also picked up three
points with a sixth-place finish in the 4x100 relay and continued to lead with
10 points in the 1,500-meter run behind a third-place finish from Tyler Nilsen
and fifth-place from Geovanni Popoca.
In the field, Dale Kerr threw for more than 40 meters in the discus once again,
measuring out at 40.76 meters for a sixth-place finish. He was fourth in the
shot put with a throw of 13.44 meters. Detrick Briggs also helped CU gain
points in the field, finishing fifth in the long jump and fourth in the triple
jump.
Campbellsville pieced together its 59 team points with one second-place finish
(8), one third-place finish (6), five fourth-place finishes (25), two
fifth-place finishes (8), two sixth-place finishes (6) and three seventh-place
finish (6).
CU will travel to the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Ky., April
10.
