Being a repeat All-American is nice, but Campbellsville
University's
Detrick Briggs wanted more. The junior from Louisville, Ky.,
entered the National Christian College Athletic Association Track Meet last
weekend in Upland, Ind., on a mission. He was determined to prove his 2009
NCCAA triple jump national title wasn't a fluke, and he did. Briggs leapt a
season-best distance of 48 feet and 1.25 inches to claim his second national
title May 7.
"I had something to prove," Briggs said. "I had to stay humble even though I
was the champion. I was determined that I wasn't going to lose. I was trying to
put Campbellsville University's track team on the map. I want people to be able
to talk about the track team and how good track is doing at CU."
The championship jump gives Briggs another mark in track career.
Not only can he now claim being the school's first NCCAA national champion and
the first for outdoor track and field, but he is the first CU student-athlete
to ever win two national championships. His title is the ninth team or
individual national title in Campbellsville history and the third captured by during
the 2009-2010 year.
"It's just amazing. I didn't know I'm the first (to repeat),"
Briggs said. I just feel blessed and honored. I'm going to keep on striving for
CU and the CU Track team. I want to bring all publicity to CU and the CU track
team."
The two national titles go along side a resume which includes a 2007 Kentucky High
School state championship and Mid-South Conference championships in 2008 and
2010.
Briggs' next mission is to break 50 feet for the first time in his career. He
hopes for that to come at the NAIA National Championships in Marion, Ind., May
27-29. It will be his first trip to the NAIA national meet since finishing 16th
as a walk-on freshman in 2008, the same year of his first Mid-South Conference
championship.
Briggs struggled all season to reach a distance good enough
to qualify for the NAIA meet, as he started the season off with an injury - one
he is still battling. But things started to come together for Briggs in
mid-April when he won the Mid-South Conference championship for triple jump.
"It feels great to start jumping the way I should be this
year," Briggs said. "It was kind of hard dealing with the injury and I still
have it but I'm working through. I just pray when it comes time to jump, that I
can turn it on."
Briggs was the only All-American for CU this season, as the honor
is awarded to the top three finishers in each event. He will warm up for the
NAIA meet by competing in the University of Louisville Twilight meet May 14.
Other Tigers to place at the NCCAA meet were Dale Kerr,
Tyler Nilsen and Qualaun Reed.
Kerr, a freshman from Louisville, finished fourth in both
the discus and shot put. His distance of 14 meters in the shot put (45 feet,
11.25 inches) broke the CU school record. He threw a distance of 136 feet, 3
inches (14.66 meters) in the discus.
Reed bounced back from a failure to finish in the
3,000-meter steeplechase to set a school record in the 800-meter run. With a
turned ankle, he finished seventh with a time of 1:58.77.
Nilsen finished eighth in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 33:34.19.
Geovanni Popoca was right behind him in ninth place with a time of 33:47.41.
