Campbellsville University's volleyball team left for Lebanon, Tenn. on Friday with a 6-2 record and returned on Saturday with a 9-3 state after two days at the Cumberland University Volleyball Classic.
Campbellsville defeated Bethel University and Mid-Continent 3-0, beat Martin Methodist 3-1 and lost a squeaker to Union University 2-3 (17-15 in the fifth set).
Senior
Caroline Martin piled up 142 assists in the four matches and also collected 43 digs. Junior
Shannon Cahill led the Tigers in kills with 45 and freshman
Audrey Sanders was the dig leader with 61.
Campbellsville handled Bethel 25-13, 25-22 and 25-15 and had a 2-1 set lead on Union University before dropping the fourth set 25-23 and losing a heartbreaker in the fifth. After a service ace by
Samantha James in the fourth set that gave CU a 23-22 lead, the Tigers committed two attack errors and were beaten on a Shelby Swink kill.
In the fifth game, where no team lead by more than a point, Union used a kill by Marcela Madeira and a service ace by Emmie Moroski to seal Union's win.
Campbellsville rebounded with a straight-set victory over Mid-Continent (25-8, 25-15 and 25-12) before taking Martin Methodist in four sets (25-14, 21-25, 25-16 and 26-24).
Monica Chernichan had 40 kills and 25 digs in the four games,
Genevieve Collette had 34 kills and James 33.
The Tigers get back into conference play on Tuesday when they host St. Catharine at 7:00 in the Powell Athletic Center.
