Shawnee deals Lady Tigers first MSC loss, 78-58

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio - Something had to give when the Lady Tigers and Shawnee State matched up in a battle for first place in the Mid-South Conference. But Campbellsville gave way too much, as the Lady Bears used a tidy little 13-5 run midway through the second half and pinned a 78-58 loss on the No. 3-ranked Lady Tigers.

The loss secured outright first place for Shawnee in the conference as the Lady Bears have a half game advantage in the win column.

"If you're No. 3 in the country, you have to come in and own up to it," said a disappointed coach Ginger Colvin. "When you play the tempo we did and are soft it's a recipe for a defeat."

CU (15-3, 8-1) scored the first seven points of the game, but Shawnee went on a run of 18-10 and the Lady Tigers never led again. They did pull even at 43-all four minutes into the second half. But that's when Shawnee (18-4, 9-1) went on a 6-0 run and another run of 10-5 to supply the space it would need down the stretch.

Campbellsville shot 33 percent from the field and Shawnee shot at a 54-percent clip.

"You're not going to shoot good when you don't take good shots," said Colvin. "It was embarrassing to watch."

The Lady Tigers were ice cold from 3 (4-25) while the Lady Bears connected on half of their 12 attempts from behind the arc. Shawnee beat CU on the boards 39-31 and hit two more free throws than did Colvin's crew.

"We may think we're too good for our own good," said Colvin. "It's a tough place to play and they have a good team, a very good team."

Courtney Danis led CU with 18 points while Shawnee was led by the 18-point performances of Abby Ballman and Alex Pohl. Pohl, who also participates in volleyball, did not play in the early December game in Powell.

The Lady Tigers stay on the road with a 2 p.m. matchup Saturday against Georgetown and a Monday makeup game at Lindsey Wilson, starting at 7:00.
