Tigers' rally falls short at Georgetown, 68-61

Box Score GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- Campbellsville University overcame a 12-point halftime deficit at Georgetown College on Saturday, but the rally fell short in a 68-61 Mid-South Conference loss.

"I don't care if it's on the road at Shawnee State or Rio Grande. I don't care where you go on the road, all you can ask for is to give yourself a chance to win, and we did that. A different day may get different results.," CU head coach Keith Adkins said.

Georgetown entered halftime up 34-22, but Campbellsville went on an 18-6 run to start the second half and tie things up, 40-40, with 13 minutes left. A Shawn Savage steal set up the Tigers' go-ahead point on Caleb Harris free throw, 41-40. Harris led CU with 22 points, followed by 21 from JaVaughn Espritt

"Both guys have been playing extremely well and it couldn't have come at a more inopportune time, because Shawn's struggling a bit," Adkins said. "We're absolutely running him into the ground. He played 39 minutes today, handles the ball 75 to 80 percent of the time, he's a good defender and we're asking him to score."

While Georgetown attempted to pull away, Savage ended his scoring drought at the eight-minute mark by entering a shootout with Georgetown's Eddie Gray and Matt Walls. The senior from Bowling Green, Ky., answered back-to-back 3s from Georgetown with a pair of his own to keep the game knotted, 50-50, with 7:22 remaining.

Gray wasn't done scoring though, as he helped lead the orange and black Tigers with at least half of their next 18 points. The closest CU came after the tie was 63-57 on a pair of free throws by Harris. Savage had a 3 rim out in the final seconds that could have pulled the game back within four.

"Reggie and Shawn both had great looks late that just didn't fall. Eventually we're going to see those shots fall for those guys and it'll be a different story for us if Caleb and JaVaughn continue to play well."

Campbellsville (12-9, 5-5) travels to Lindsey Wilson College on Monday for a MSC game at 9 p.m. ET. The game in Biggers Sports Center will be a makeup game for the one scheduled Jan. 20. That game was canceled due to dangerous road conditions caused by winter weather.
