CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- It was easy as 1-2-3. Campbellsville University blew past St. Catharine College in women's volleyball Thursday night in Powell Athletic Center for a three-set Mid-South Conference victory.
The win (25-18, 25-13, 25-10) avenged a September loss to the Patriots and keeps the Lady Tigers in the driver's seat for the Mid-South Conference regular season.
Campbellsville held a narrow 9-7 lead to start the match, before stretching its lead to 17-10 in the first set. The seven-point margin remained for the first-set win.
After missing the opening serve of the second set, Campbellsville jumped out to a 7-1 lead en route to a 12-point win, 25-13. CU's largest lead of the night came on match point, 25-10, to end the night.
Genevieve Collette led CU with 11 kills in the match, while
Laura DeGear and
Monica Chernichan were close behind with nine each. Caitlyn Dresing had 14 digs and
Samantha James had three total blocks. Lillian DaSilva had 23 digs, including 10 in the first set.
The night was not only about volleyball though, as St. Catharine and Campbellsville joined together to help raise awareness for breast cancer through a Dig Pink Night. The Lady Tigers warmed up in self-made T-shirts, which featured a breast cancer ribbon on the front and their jersey number in Roman numerals on the back. They wore pink accessories with their black uniforms. SCC wore pink jerseys.
All proceeds raised from the event will go to the Side-Out Foundation's breast cancer initiative. To make a donation to Campbellsville's Dig Pink fund-raising efforts, contact head coach Amy Eckenfels at ameckenfels@campbellsville.edu.
Campbellsville (13-8) will make a two-day, Mid-South Conference swing to Ohio this weekend to play the University of Rio Grande on Friday and Shawnee State University on Saturday.
