WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - Campbellsville's chances at a regular-season Mid-South Conference championship were dealt a serious blow Wednesday when the Lady Patriots rallied from a 2-1 deficit to pin a 3-2 loss on the Lady Tigers, 20-25, 25-12, 25-19, 18-25 and 10-15.
It was a Jekyll & Hyde night for both squads.
CU blew a 20-17 lead in the first set while Cumberlands was scoring nine straight points pull away for the win.
Samantha James served nine straight points in the second set as Campbellsville built an 18-10 lead and ended the set on a 9-2 run.
The Lady Tigers won set three, aided by four Cumberlands service errors, leading 13-7 and 22-16, a kill by James punctuated the win.
CU took its turn at errors in the fourth-set loss, losing its attack after a 9-9 tie. The Lady Patriots built an 18-13 lead and kept Campbellsville at bay the rest of the way.
The Lady Tigers blew 4-0 and 9-5 leads in the deciding set, allowing Cumberlands to score 11 unanswered points in a 15-10 loss.
Genevieve Collette led the team in kills with 15, followed by
Monica Chernichan, James,
Shannon Cahill and
Laura DeGear with 13, 11
eight and seven, respectively.
Lilian DaSilva picked up 20 assists and
Jackie Schwieger had 17.
Caitlin Dresing led the team with 16 digs and got support from Cahill (14), DaSilva (13) and
Audrey Sanders (10).
The win for Cumberlands improved its record to 16-9, 5-6 MSC. Campbellsville, which had won six straight matches, fell to 18-12, 8-2 MSC.
Campbellsville is in a must-win situation Thursday when they meet Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, Ky. in an 8 p.m. start.
