COLUMBIA, KY. - Amy Eckenfels' CU volleyball team has been like a box of chocolates this season. Everytime the coach reached in for a treat she didn't know if she was going to get caramel pecan bark or a jelly-filled surprise.
And they may have played like licorous the night before at Cumberlands, losing in five sets, but on Thursday night against Lindsey Wilson, they turned up as Whitman's Sampler.
In a high-energy match the Lady Tigers won in three sets, 25-20, 25-22 and 25-23.
"As a team our offense and defense was immaculate," said Eckenfels. "They really challenged us in the middle and we responded. We just really wanted this."
Campbellsville pulled away to a working margin (18-14) on a
Genevieve Collette kill. Up until then the set was nip-and-tuck. The Lady Tigers committed a service error at 21-18 but won five of the next seven points.
Laura DeGear's kill in the middle of set two gave CU a 13-10 lead that they would never relinquish. Lindsey got within two at 21-19, 22-20 and 24-22.
In set three, the Lady Tigers overcame five service errors, again earning a working margin (17-14) on a
Monica Chernichan kill. The Lady Blue Raiders pulled to within one three times
toward the end of the set.
The Canadian connection of
Monica Chernichan and
Genevieve Collette had 12 and 11 kills, respectively.
Lilian DaSilva had 25 assists and
Jackie Schwieger 14. Fifty-five team digs were spread out evenly after
Caitlin Dresing's 11. Shanon Cahil had nine,
Audrey Sanders and DaSilva seven each, James with five and Collette and Chernichan with four apiece.
Campbellsville improves to 19-12, 9-2 MSC while Lindsey falls to 27-2, 10-2 MSC. The loss broke a 20-match winning streak for Lindsey.
The win evens both teams in the loss column with two apiece. Lindsey has completed its conference slate and Campbellsville plays Georgetown early next week.
Campbellsville will host Georgetown at 7:00 on Tuesday in its final regular-season Mid-South Conference match and Indiana University Southeast at 7:00 on Thursday for Senior Night
