Two sets down, Georgetown rallies to eliminate Volley Tigers

FRANKFORT , Ky. - In the rubber match of a couple of regular-season five-setters, Georgetown stormed back from a two-set deficit to pin a 3-2 loss on Campbellsville in the semi-finals of the Mid-South Conference Tournament.

Played at the Frankfort Convention Center, The Lady Tigers could not stand prosperity as they saw their promising night reversed in the third set. Leading 24-19, CU could not close out the set, losing six straight points for a 24-24 tie and then watched Georgetown close out, winning two straight points after it was tied at 26.

Genevieve Collette and Samantha James helped CU construct workmanlike leads of 18-13, 20-15 and 24-19. But a service error at 24-19 seemed be the momentum changer. The Lady Tigers committed a service error, a lift call, a net ball and an attack error to end the set.

Somehow Campbellsville (21-14) pulled out the first two sets after trailing most of the way in both.

In set one, a service error set Campbellsville back 18-22. Shannon Cahill's kill brought the Lady Tigers to within one, 21-22. Larua DeGear's block gave CU a 24-23 lead and a block won the set 25-23.

Set two was pretty much the same, Campbellsville digging itself a 17-12 hole. After a timeout, Giselle Hernandez recorded a kill, Collette two kills and a long rally point gave CU a 23-22 lead. Cahill had a kill at 24-all and then a block and DeGear's block/kill sealed the 26-24 win.

But the Lady Tigers were not as fortunate from then on. After coming from ahead to lose set three,  Campbellsville was spanked in set four 25-19.

In the fifth, and deciding, set Georgetown broke open a close match as Kelsey Luckett had four kills down the stretch for a 14-11 lead.

Cahill had 14 kills and Chernichan and Collette had 14 and 12, respectively. Lilian DaSilva (33) and Jackie Schwieger (20) shared 53 assists. Audrey Sanders had 28 digs, Dasilva and Caitlin Dresing had 18 each and Cahill 15.

The loss eliminates Campbellsville from the Mid-South Tournament play. Georgetown will meet the winner of the Lindsey Wilson-Rio match at 3:30 Sunday.
