FRANKFORT , Ky. - In what their coach described as a lackluster performance, Campbellsville volleyball moved on to the semi-finals of the Mid-South Tournament with a 3-1 win over St. Catharine, 25-20, 25-16, 17-25, 25-13.
"We're moving on and that's what you want to do in tournament play," said Coach Amy Eckenfels. "But that's about all I can say about it."
In set one, CU (21-13) built a working margin of 17-10 after kills by
Monica Chernichan and
Samantha James. St. Catharine, which had beaten the Lady Tigers earlier in the year in five sets, closed the gap to 19-17, but a service error ended a 4-0 run by the lady Patriots.
Laura DeGear's kill for a 23-19 lead was followed by two SCC attack errors for the 25-20 win.
The Lady Tigers used a 9-3 run midway through the second set to lead 19-11 and St. Catharine never got closer than six points the rest of the way. During that 9-3 run, CU used kills by James and Giselle Hernndez. SCC ended the set with errors on three of the last four points.
The Lady Tigers slept through the third set, falling behind 9-12, committing five attack errors and two service errors in the set's first 21 points. They never found any rhythm after that. The Lady Patriots won the set's five points on four kills and a block.
Campbellsville took control of set 4 when Chernichan had a kill for a 7-4 lead. CU built that to 12-6 and eventually to 19-10 when James and Chernichan had successive kills. MSC Player of the Year,
Shannon Cahill, had five kills in the set.
For the match Cahill had a team-high 17 kills, followed by Chernichan (10), James (9) and Collette (8). Lilian DaSiva and
Jackie Schwieger shared 46 assists.
Audrey Sanders and
Caitlin Dresing had 16 digs apiece.
Campbellsville will meet Georgetown College in the MSC Tournament semifinals at 6 p.m. Saturday in the Frankfort Convention Center.
