PORTSMOUTH, Ohio - Campbellsville tried to dry up a three-game losing string on Shawnee's home floor Thursday night, but the Lady Tigers were doused with more disappointment, losing to the Lady Bears 62-60.
Mackenzie Lee had a layup just before the ending buzzer and drew contact, but no foul was called.
"You run a play for a kid like Mac and you couldn't ask for a better look," said
Ginger Colvin. "We made some mistakes, but our effort is there."
Shawnee was the site of the Lady Tigers' last regular-season Mid-South Conference loss.
"We could be better," said Colvin, "but this was the No.-4 ranked team in the nation we just played."
Leading by one at the half, Campbellsville (7-2, 1-1) rode
Chelsea Craig's shoulders early in the second 20 minutes. Craig scored five points and
Courtney Clifton had four as Campbellsville constructed a 43-36 lead with 12:00 to go. But just as in the first half, the Lady Tigers could not shake the Lady Bears.
Abby Ballman wrapped two baskets around one by Alannah Sheets and Shawnee led 49-48 with 8:20 to go.
Mary Jehlik unknotted a 53-53 tie with a 3 at the 5:25 mark, but CU could not hold that lead either.
Nothing came easy for CU. Campbellsville committed three consecutive turnovers down the stretch that lead to a Ballman basket and two free throws that put Shawnee (7-1, 3-0) within 60-59.
Lee tied it with a free throw and then Ballman sank the final two points of the game from the free throw line.
Clifton led four Lady Tigers in double figures with 20. Lee had 12, Jehlik 10 and Craig11.
Campbellsville led most of the first half and built a 13-2 lead when
Katie Allen hit the front end of two free throw tosses. But Shawnee chipped away at that lead and took a 28-26 advantage when Sheets hit a bucket with less than two minutes to go.
Mackenzie Lee knocked down a 3 at the buzzer giving CU a 29-28 advantage at the break.
