PULASKI, Tenn. -
Shannon Wathen's Tiger softball team played 16 games
last season when the outcomes were decided by one run. Wathen's Tigers
started the 2011 season with another one-run game, a 2-1 loss to
Freed-Hardeman, and then lost again to host Martin Methodist, 7-2.
It was the first day of the Martin Methodist College Meltdown
Tournament, but CU never really warmed to their first competition of the
season, collecting only four hits in the first game and five in the
second.
The Tigers plated a run in the first inning against Freed when
Kacie Vincent (Louisville, Ky.), who walked, scored on
Bailey Dillender's (Lexington, Ky.) double.
Alyssa Barker (Frankfort, Ky.) and
Stephanie Weathers (Bardstown, Ky.) had singles in the game. Dillender added another double.
Courtney Turpin (Lawrenceburg, Ky.) pitched a four-hitter in her first appearance on the mound, but it was a two-out single and homer in the bottom of the first that proved to be her undoing.
Taylor Wroe (Hawesville, Ky.) shouldered the loss in game two, and got relief help from
Martina Riney (Owensboro, Ky.) in the fourth. But, by that time the Tigers trailed 6-0.
Emma Napier (Scottsville, Ky.) was hit by a pitch in the fifth, stole second and took third on a fly ball to the outfield. She scored when
Jennifer England's (Campbellsville, Ky.) grounder to second was misplayed. Vincent scored in the seventh after a single, stolen base and the a double by England.
Napier, Vincent and
Heather Oakley (Lexington, Ky.) all had singles, while England added a single for her two-hit game.
Campbellsville gets right back on the diamond Saturday with games against McKendree (2:00) and Reinhardt (4:00). They will close out the six-game tourney with Sunday match-ups against Reinhardt (4:00) and Martin Methodist (6:00).
