GULF SHORES, Ala. -
Emma Napier had a four-hit day and scored five runs as the Lady Tigers moved into elimination play at the Gulf Coast Invitational with a 2-2 record, losing 5-3 loss and winning 6-3.
Napier was 2-2 with three runs scored and two RBI as CU (4-14) jumped out to a 6-0 lead against Columbia (Mo.) College and held on for a 6-3 win. She had a double and a home run.
Taylor Wroe picked up the win and fellow freshman,
Courtney Turpin, got the save - combining on a 10-hitter.
Bailey Dillender and
Jordan Cornett had multiple-hit games, Dillender with three and Cornett two. They both had two RBI. Additionally,
Kacie Vincent,
Alex Jane Clemmons and
Stephanie Weathers all reached safely.
Becca Cook had an RBI.
The Lady Crusaders (15-0) got off to a quick start, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Carey starter Kelsey Jo Smith got off to a hot start, retiring the first nine batters. But Campbellsville scored twice in the fourth inning to make the score 3-2.
In the top of the fifth a WCU error prolonged the inning and Campbellsville capitalized, tying the game at 3-3. Anna Ard entered in relief of Smith and worked out of the jam in the fifth to halt the Lady Tiger rally.
In the bottom of the sixth, WCU's Jasmine Shelby knocked in the go-ahead run and Sarah Beckham followed with another RBI.
Campbellsville's five hits came from
Jennifer England's double (1 RBI), and singles by Napier (2) and one each by Clemmons and Allysa Barker.
Turpin shouldered the loss, but her teammates played error-free ball behind her.
CU opens pool play on Saturday with noon matchup against William Carey and Columbia (Mo.) College at 4:00.
