Shirley sixth, Tigers seventh after round one at RNT Invitational

ROME, Ga. -- Campbellsville University men's golf sits in seventh place at the Rome News-Tribune Invitational after one day. The Tigers shot 297 through the first round, five strokes behind third-place LaGrange College. Shorter College is fourth with a 295, while Reinhardt University and Berry College tied for fifth-place at 296.



Trey Shirley made the largest adjustment on the back nine than any golfer in the 90-player tournament. The sophomore from Edmonton, Ky., leads the field with six birdies as he shaved seven strokes off his score (39-32) to shoot 4-under par on the back half of his score card. The performance moved him from tied for 42nd to tied for sixth place at 71 (-1) after the first day. He will enter round two only one stroke out of third place. Alex Irvin of Berry College leads the field with a first-round 66, followed by Lee University's Tyler Smith, who shot 67.

Campbellsville's Scott Foster knocked four strokes off his score on the back nine to finish the first round with a 74 and is tied for 20th place with teammate Brandon Collier, who shot 37-37. Cory Prewitt was the Tigers' fourth score, shooting 37-41 and Quinn Cole was fifth for CU shooting 44-40 for a first-day 84.

Lee University leads the tournament with a first round score of 284, as all four of Lee's top scores rank in the Top 20. University of the Cumberlands is second at 289.

Action resumes Tuesday morning at the Stonebridge Country Club.
