MONTGOMERY, W.Va. - Campbellsville earned its first sweep of the season
on Tuesday as the Lady Tigers evened their conference mark at 3-3 with
12-4 and 3-2 wins over West Virginia Tech.
Coach
Shannon Wathen got her best production of the year from her freshman.
Courtney Turpin and
Taylor Wroe combined for the first-game win.
Martina Riney went the distance in the second game, recording the third out in the bottom of the seventh (a strike out) with the bases loaded.
But freshmen also had big days at the plate.
Natalie Duncan (Bowling, Green, Ky.) was a triple short of hitting for the cycle in game one and her three hits accounted for three RBI. Albany, Ky.'s
Brooke Boils' first hit as a Lady Tiger was a three-run homer in the fifth inning after Tech had tied the score at 3-3. Freshman
Becca Cook (Campbellsville, Ky.) also picked up an RBI with a single.
CU had 15 hits in the first game.
Alex Jane Clemmons,
Kacie Vincent and
Bailey Dillender all had one-RBI games. Clemmons' came on a solo homer in the seventh, Vincent's a single and Dillender had three singles.
Morgan Bullock plated two runs with a single.
Jennifer England had two singles and a double and
Jordan Cornett a safety.
In the fifth when Campbellsville got all the runs it would eventually need for the win, Clemmons reached on an error and was sacrificed by Vincent to second. Dillender's single plated Clemmons. England reached base with a single and both runners advanced on a wild pitch to set the table for a two-run double from Duncan.
The Lady Tigers could manage but four hits in the second game, but two of them were homers. Dillender collected two RBI with a home run after Vincent singled in the first. Bullock homered in the fourth. England completed a four-hit day with a single.
Riney gave up four hits in her seven innings of work, fanning nine Tech batters. She stranded eight Lady Golden Bears.
Campbellsville travels to Pikeville (11 a.m.) Saturday for a double header and then is on the road again Tuesday (2:00) at St. Catharine.
