COLUMBIA, Ky. - In softball you can't allow your opponent second
chances, and Campbellsville gave No. 19 Lindsey Wilson a few too many as
the Lady Blue Raiders pulled off a Thursday evening sweep, 4-3, 2-0.
Lindsey Wilson used home runs from Ally Goniea and Kaylee Garrett in game one and a shutout pitching performance from Morgan Paschall in game two to sweep CU (15-20, 7-5 MSC).
Jennifer England got CU on the board early with a first-game, first-inning home run. The Lady Tigers had five hits in the game - a double by
Kacie Vincent and singles
Natalie Duncan,
Brooke Boils and England.
Goniea finished with two hits, two RBIs and a run scored on her line-drive home run in the bottom of the fourth inning of the opener for Lindsey Wilson (27-4, 8-0 MSC). Garrett went 2-for-4 at the plate in both games combined, knocking in a run and hitting a pinch hit homer to help break a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning in game one.
After Lindsey tied the game at 1-1 in the second, Campbellsville used a Vincent double and England single to get the first two runners on. Vincent eventually scored on a passed ball, but could do no more damage.
The Lady Tigers went back ahead 3-2 in the fifth when
Nicole Bohanon, pinch running for
Morgan Bullock, who had walked, stole second, advanced to third on Boils' single and scored on an
Alex Jane Clemmons pop out to the first baseman. Lindsey again tied the score in its half of the inning and scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth on Garrett's homer.
Senior Anyibell Ramirez (16-3) earned the win in the opener, pitching seven innings with seven strikeouts while allowing five hits and three earned runs. Freshman
Martina Riney pitched well, allowing seven hits, walking three and striking out six. Paschall improved to 11-1 after her complete-game shutout with nine strikeouts.
Courtney Turpin was strong through six innings for the Tigers in game two, allowing just one walk and one earned run with three strikeouts. But her wild pitch in the first gave Lindsey an extra out and the Lady Blue Raiders used it to score the only run they would need. They got an insurance run in the sixth.
Right fielder
Jennifer England paced the Tigers, going 2-for-3 in game one with a home run and RBI.
Vincent,
Becca Cook and England recorded the only CU hits in game two. The Lady Tigers left five runners stranded.
Campbellsville hosts Shawnee State on Saturday in a 2 p.m. double header.
