WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - Thursday was a doubleheader full of doubles for Lady Tiger softball. Campbellsville University racked up nine doubles and three triples in a 15-0, 8-0 double-dip shutout at University of the Cumberlands to move within two games of second-place in the Mid-South Conference.
Bailey Dillender started the extra-base hit extravaganza with a one-out, two-RBI double to start game one. After taking a 2-0 lead in the opening inning, the Lady Tigers poured out 13 runs in the third inning. CU maintained its 15-0 lead to end the game early after five innings.
Campbellsville collected 13 runs off 10 hits and two errors in the third inning. Jennifer England started the 17-batter inning with a single through the hole at short and Dillender followed with her second of three doubles on the day. Natalie Duncan drove in the first two runs of the inning and scored on a fielder's choice RBI by Becca Cook. After going up 6-0 on an RBI by Brooke Boils, Alex Jane Clemmons tripled to clear the bases and stretch the lead to 9-0.
Eight of the third-inning runs were earned, leaving five unearned due to Patriot errors in the inning. Those five were driven in on an RBI ground out by Jordan Cornett, a two-RBI single by Morgan Bullock and a two-RBI triple from Boils.
Campbellsville threatened again in the fourth inning, but left two runners on base without scoring a run. Martina Riney picked up the win after three scoreless innings. She allowed three hits and a walk while striking out two. Leslie Hastings pitched two innings of relief for CU, allowing two hits. The loss went to Cumberlands' Angela Steuer, who allowed 14 runs, 10 earned off 11 hits.
In the second game, Campbellsville scored a run in each the third and fifth innings on RBI doubles by Dillender and Duncan. The Lady Tigers posted a six-run sixth inning, in which Boils and Clemmons doubled in the first two runs. Duncan also tripled in two runs in the game, while Kacie Vincent and Cornett each had an RBI.
Courtney Turpin went the distance in the six-inning, two-hit shutout, while Jessica Speake recorded the loss for Cumberlands.
Offensively, Campbellsville was led in hitting by Duncan in the doubleheader with five hits and five RBIs. CU combined for 27 hits in 11 innings of play.
The Lady Tigers (25-20, 15-5 MSC) return home Thursday with a 10-game win streak to face University of the Cumberlands again in a Mid-South Conference doubleheader. The games are being made up from a rain out earlier this season. Start time is 3 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park.
