CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - University of the Cumberlands used a hit and two errors to score the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh of game two to snuff out an 11-game Lady Tiger win streak and earn a softball split Thursday at Veterans Memorial Park.
Campbellsville (26-21, 16-6 MSC) had tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth on
Bailey Dillender's run-scoring double and an RBI-single by
Morgan Bullock. After the Lady Patriots were handed an extra out in their half of the seventh, CU trailed 3-2.
In the bottom of the seventh,
Brooke Boils drew a one-out walk followed by an
Alex Jane Clemmons single. But Boils was called out for interfering with the shortstop on
Kacie Vincent's fielder's choice.
Jennifer England's soft liner to third ended the game.
In all, the Lady Tigers committed six errors in game two. CU could manage only five hits off U of C's Angela Steuer. Clemmons,
Natalie Duncan and Bullock all had singles and Dillender and Vincent doubled.
The Lady Patriots (11-26, 3-15 MSC) scored twice in the fourth when two errors, and a walk by CU pitcher
Courtney Turpin, got the Lady Tigers in a bases-loaded jam. One run scored on a fielder's choice and then Carrie Root's singled plated run two.
Turpin allowed six hits and walked two in her seven innings of work. Campbellsville stranded seven runners, six in its last three at-bats.
In game one,
Martina Riney tossed a seven hitter, pitching out of trouble in the third and fifth innings.
Campbellsville led 6-0 before Cumberlands got on the board with two runs in the third. Ashley Wampler hammered a four-bagger after a leadoff double by Erin Sears.
CU scored two in the first after Clemmons and Vincent singled.
Jordan Cornett singled and scored on Boils' single.
Becca Cook, who doubled, scored on a throwing error. Boils scored on a error and Dillender plated the final of four runs with a single.
Clemmons, who had to leave the game in the third when a collision with the left-field fence bloodied her mouth, returned in the fourth and promptly parked a ball to center field, scoring Boils.
The Lady Tigers had 12 hits, two-hit games by Dillender (HR), Cornett (2B), Clemmon (HR) and Boils. Vincent, England, Cook (2B) and Duncan (2B) all reached safely.
Campbellsville is scheduled for a Saturday home double header with Georgetown, first game 1:00.
