Golf teams finish third in MSC Spring Tourney

BARDSTOWN, Ky. - The Campbellsville men's and women's golf teams both finished third in the Mid-South Spring Tournament Tuesday at the at rain-drenched Bardstown Country Club at Maywood.



The men had to rally from eight shots down after the first two rounds of the 54-hole tournament to overtake Georgetown for third, beating them by one shot, 946-947.

The women shot seven strokes worse on Day 2 and lost a two-stroke lead they held over University of the Cumberlands as the Lady Patriots slipped into second, 686-691.

Cumberlands' men and Lindsey Wilson's women won the event, earning both teams a trip to the NAIA National Tournament.

Kaela Smith could not validate her opening-round 81 that had her in a tie for medalist, and the Elizabethtown, Ky. senior finished in a tie for third. Lindsey's Kaitlin Allan fired a second-day 81 to tie teammate Kelsey Joslyn at 165 and then beat her teammate in a playoff.

CU's McLain Farr, having her best tournament finish, shot 83-85 to tie Smith for third at 168. Lindsey's Chelsey Key also shot 168. Other CU women's scores included: Lauren Goodin, tied 10th, 177 (89-88); Katie White, tied 12th, 178 (89-89); Amy Cline, tied 18th, 187 (92-95); and Meleigha Pollock, 19th, 189 (95-94).

The best a Campbellsville man could muster was seventh-place finish by Trey Shirley. Shirley shot a third-round 80 to fall out of contention for medalist, a spot he was within two strokes of after round two.. Tiger senior Logan Griffin saved his best for last with a third-round 74, good for a tie for 21st, 246 (87, 85, 74).

Cumberlands Pierre Carlsson shot the third round's best score, 72, and won medalsit by one shot over two of his teammates, Aaron Watkins and Niclas Rigbrandt and Georgetown's Christian Haven.

The Campbellsville men's total of 947 was 45 strokes out of Cumberlands first place 901 and nine shots off of runner-up Lindsey Wilson, 937.

Shirley was followed by Cory Prewitt, 11th, 237 (79, 78, 80); Scott Foster, tie 16th, 242 (78, 84, 80); Quinn Cole, tie 29th, 253 (79, 83, 91); and Brandon Collier, 39th, 256 (83, 88, 85).

Women's team finish: Lindsey Wilson, 669; Cumberlands, 686; Campbellsville, 691; Georgetown, 811; St. Catherine, 850.

Men's team finish: Cumberlands, 901; Lindsey Wilson, 937; Campbellsville, 946; Georgetown, 947; St. Catharine, 983; Shawnee State, 996; Pikeville, 1,030; Uva. Wise, 1,034; West Virginia Tech, 1,048.
