DANVILLE, Ky. - A trip the winner's bracket final of the Mid-South Softball Tournament was punctuated Friday by Lady Tiger Coach
Shannon Wathen's 300th victory.
But not before her team made things interesting. After
Bailey Dillender plated five runs with two mammoth homers, CU led 8-3 after five.
But University of the Cumberlands, which beat No. 1 seed Lindsey Wilson, loaded the bases in the top of the seventh and had the potential go-ahead run at the plate when Wathen re-inserted starting pitcher
Courtney Turpin.
After
Brooke Boils error scored Cumberlands' fifth run, Turpin enticed Brittany Loveless into a grounder to
Jordan Cornett a second for the third out.
Campbellsville will play Rio Grande, the No. 1 seed out of the East Division, which beat St. Catharine and Georgetown, at 1 p.m. Saturday at Millennium Park.
Turpin pitched five innings of four-hit ball before seeing relief from
Martina Riney in the top of the sixth. Riney set the Lady Patriots down in order in the sixth and had one out in the seventh before her wheels came off. She issued a walk to Jerilyn Meeks and a base hit to Carrie Root before also walking Lacy Walters.
With two outs, Riney walked in a run before Turpin returned to the circle.
Campbellsville had eight hits, two each by Dillender,
Alex Jane Clemmons and Cornett. Clemmons also had a home run knocking in two runs - giving the Lady Tigers nine of their 10 runs in their two games on four baggers.
Natalie Duncan doubled in the fifth and
Kacie Vincent also reached safely.
The Lady Tigers led 3-2 after 1 ½ innings and the took a 5-2 lead on Clemmons' homer. CU scored again in the fourth on Cornett's single before Cumberlands picked up a solo run in the fifth off a home run by Ashley Wampler.
