LEBANON, Tenn. - CU's volleyball team's wake-up call came a little late Saturday as the Lady Tigers lost to Trevecca Nazarene, 3-2, in the first Day-2 match at the Cumberland University Classic. But the Lady Tigers dominated the nightcap 3-0 over the host squad.
The split moves Campbellsville to 4-2 (1-0) with a full slate of games over the next 10 days.
TreveccaCampbellsville never led through the first two set losses of 22-25 and 17-25. But in the third and fourth sets (won 25-23 and 25-22) CU made enough plays to force a deciding fifth set.
The Lady Tigers saw a 5-0 lead evaporate in the deciding set and were down 13-10 before tying the match at 14-14 on
Samantha James' kill. Consecutive attack errors, however, allowed Trevecca the 16-14 win.
Shannon Cahill and
Giselle Hernandez had 21 and 14 kills, respectively, in the match. Hernandez had six in the critical fourth set as the Lady Tigers were fending off a Trevecca rally by scoring four of the set's final seven points.
Leading 16-10, CU allowed TNU back in the set by committing four attack errors around three kills by TNU's Jenna Robertson. But a kill by
Kelly Moyer and three by Cahill in the fourth salted the 25-22 win.
Audrey Sanders led four players in double-figure digs with 22. Cahill and Hernandez had 11 and DaSilva 10. DaSilva accounted for 41 of her team's 59 assists in the match.
CumberlandCU defeated Cumberland 25-22, 25-21 and 25-15 to sweep the host team.
The Lady Tigers pulled away from a 22-21 lead in the first set thanks to a game-ending kill by Cahill.
In set two, Cu had to rally from a pulled away from a 17-all tie to win eight of the next 12 points. During that span thanks to kills by
Laura DeGear (2) and James.
Campbellsville never trailed in the third set, taking leads of 10-5 and 19-10 en route to the 25-15 win.
Cahill and
Genevieve Collette led the Lady Tigers in kills with 13 and 11, respectively.
Monica Chernichan had seven. DaSilva had 25 of the team's 36 assists,
Jackie Schwieger adding seven. Cahill also had 12 digs.
CU goes on the road Tuesday to St. Catharine College for its second Mid-South Conference match-up with the 10-2 Lady Patriots.
