ST. CATHARINE, Ky. - Campbellsville went on the road Tuesday in search of its second MSC victory in as many tries, but the road was unkind to the Lady Tigers as they lost a five-setter to St. Catharine, 22-25, 17-25, 25-23, 25-21, 8-15.
It was the third five-set loss this season for the Lady Tigers, who dug themselves a serious hole when they went down 2-0 in sets while St. Catharine (11-3, 1-1) commanded the net early and late.
In the deciding fifth game, CU committed three attack errors in the first seven points and could never recover. They got no closer than two points after trailing only 3-4.
Campbellsville (4-3, 1-1) rolled out to small leads in the first (3-0) and second (3-1) sets, but SCC took control. In set one, St. Catharine led 10-9, but scored eight of the next 14 points. In the second set, SCC took the lead at 8-7 and then ballooned it to 21-16.
Campbellsville used a kill by
Monica Chernichan to force a fourth set in a nip-and-tip third. Tied at 15-all, CU won three straight points and held off the Lady Patriots.
In the fourth, the Lady Tigers used a rafter-rattling point at 23-19 and a kill by
Shannon Cahill to seal the 25-21 lead.
Chernichan led CU with 17 kills, followed by Cahill's 14. Cahill led the Lady Tigers in digs with 15, followed by
Jackie Schwieger and
Audrey Sanders, 11 and 10, respectively. Schwieger had 33 assists and
Lilian DaSilva had 17.
CU leaves Thursday for Bourbonnais, Ill. and the Olivet Nazarene Tournament where they will have a noon return match against Trevecca, which beat the Lady Tigers in five set at Cumberland University last weekend. Ozark Christian (4:00) provides the other Friday match-up. St Ambrose (9 a.m.) and Indiana Tech (1:00)will be the Saturday opponents
The junior varsity prevailed over SCC 2-0 (25-11, 25-23).
