GEORGETOWN, Ky. - It was a good time to lose a monkey.
CU's Volley Tigers, sporting four five-set losses already this season, sent the monkey packing Tuesday night with a thrilling five-set victory over Georgetown, 20-25, 25-19, 27-25, 9-25 and 15-11.
"We told the girls after that fourth game that they just needed to push their hardest," said Coach Amy Eckenfels. "We thought it was our game, like it was there for the taking."
The win gives Campbellsville (6-6, 2-1) a tie for the West Division conference lead with Lindsey Wilson. Georgetown drops to 7-8, 2-2. It was the first time Campbellsville had beaten Georgetown in Georgetown since 2007.
The Lady Tigers fell behind in the first set, took a 17-13 lead and then watched it evaporate as Georgetown won seven of the next nine points. CU committed two attack errors at 19-20 and Georgetown served out the match.
In set two, Campbellsville reversed a 2-7 deficit and took a l4-13 lead that they would not relinquish in evening the match at 1-1, with a 25-19 win.
Audrey Sanders served six consecutive points early in the third set, giving CU an 11-5 lead. The Lady Tigers then held off a fierce GC rally to take a 2-1 lead in sets with a 27-25 win. Georgetown, trailing 18-10 drew even at 23-, 24- and 25-all. But Campbellsville was able to win the set-deciding points. But that wasn't the only area where Sanders shined. She had 34 of the team's 101 digs.
Shannon Cahill (15),
Lilian DaSilva (14) and Caitlin Dressing (10) also reached double figures in digs.
Cahill led the team (13) in kills followed my
Monica Chernichan's 11. DaSilva (22) and
Jackie Schwieger (16) collected 38 of the team's 47 assists.
Georgetown pounded the Lady Tigers in set four 9-25. Campbellsville fell behind 10-3 and was outscored 15-6 down the stretch.
Part of the fourth-set play spilled over into the fifth as Eckenfels was forced to call timeout at 2-5. Her team drew even at 8-all and then were behind 10-11 when Eckenfels called her team to the sideline again. They responded with five straight points.
The University of the Cumberlands, a four-set winner over St. Catharine, comes to town Thursday for another West (7:00) match.
