Lady Tigers drop the Patriots in three sets

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Sometimes the match that follows a large emotional upset, such as Tuesday's five-set win at Georgetown College, is the one to worry about the most. That was not the case Thursday, as Campbellsville University volleyball remained in the driver's seat in the Mid-South Conference West Division with a three-set victory (25-15, 25-21, 25-14) over University of the Cumberlands in the Powell Athletic Center.

Campbellsville jumped out to a 4-1 lead to start the match, but Cumberlands rallied to take a 12-11 lead midway through. The Lady Tigers were relentless though, outscoring the Patriots 14-3 the remainder of the first set. Samantha James and Kelly Moyer combined for four of the Lady Tigers' final five points to put away the opening game.

In the second set, Campbellsville snapped a 7-7 tie with a five-point run at the hand of four Lady Tiger kills. The Lady Tigers lead built to 16-10 before Cumberlands rallied out of a timeout to pull even, 19-19. Laura DeGear spiked a Patriots attempt to break the tie as Campbellsville pulled away, 25-21, with four kills from Canadian duo Monica Chernichan and Genevieve Collette.

Set three was close early as well, tied 4-4, but CU steadily pulled away with the 11-point win. The Lady Tigers scattered 14 kills, three blocks and two aces to secure 19 of their 25 points.

Campbellsville played balanced across the board throughout the night. On the attack, Collette led the Lady Tigers with 11 kills, but Chernichan was close behind with nine. James, Moyer and DeGear each had eight kills. Assists came from freshman Jackie Schwieger and senior Lilian DaSilva with 24 and 20, respectively.

Defesnively, Audrey Sanders led CU with 14 digs, while DaSilva and Cahill each had 12. Caitlin Dresing had eight. Cahill, DaSilva, Dresing, Sanders and Schwieger each had an ace in the match.

Campbellsville (7-6, 3-1 MSC) will take nearly a week off before hosting the University of Virginia's College at Wise for a MSC match Sept. 28.
