Volley Tigers split in first Day of Indiana Tech Tourney

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Campbellsville rallied from a set down against No. 16 Madonna in the first match of the Liz Lykowski Memorial Tournament, but the Lady Tigers couldn't match that momentum in Friday's second match, losing to Indiana Wesleyan in three sets.



CU defeated Madonna, which came into the match at 16-2, 23-25, 25-23, 25-20 and 25-23. The No. 26-ranked Indiana Wesleyan, 16-3, dismantled the Lady Tigers 11-25, 20-25 and 9-25

The loss brings to an end the Lady Tigers' five-match win streak. They move into Saturday play 9-7, 4-1 MSC.

"The afternoon win was a good one," said Coach Amy Eckenfels."We were able to spread the offense around with our ball control and we blocked very well. We really wanted this win, too."

Madonna

The Lady Tigers blew a 17-13 lead in the first set and watched as Madonna tied the set at 23-all before a service error and a Madonna kill closed out the set for the Crusaders.

In set two, CU took a 19-15 lead on a Tara Robertson kill and then watched that lead evaporate. Tied at 23-23, Madonna committed an attack error and Monica Crehnichan's kills punctuated the 25-23 win.

Campbellsville drew even at 13-all in the third set and had the set tied again at 20-20 when Laura DeGear, Genevieve Collette and Shannon Cahill closed out the 25-20 win sandwiched around two attack errors by Madonna.

The Lady Tigers could not stand prosperity and trailed 20-16 in the fourth set. CU committed three service errors to trail 23-18 before winning seven straight points to close out the match.

Audrey Sanders led the team with 24 digs and Lilian DaSilva and Jackie Schwieger had 29 and 18 assists, respectively. Fifty-two kills were divided among six players, led by Collette's 14. Chernichan had 13 and Cahill, Samantha James, DeGear and Robertson had nine, eight, four and four, respectively.

Indiana Wesleyan

Campbellsville was never really in the first set as Wesleyan won 10 of the set's first 14 points. CU crawled to within 10-15, but then proceeded to lose five straight points.

In set two, Wesleyan broke away from a 13-all tie and put together a 7-2 run to lead 20-15.

The Lady Tigers dug a 2-7 hole i the third set and were never really in the game.

CU will play Olivet Nazarene (15-5) at noon Saturday.
