Cumberlands runs away late, beats Lady Tigers 72-59

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky.  -  Campbellsville drew even early in the second half, but a 21-6 run by Cumberlands was all the Lady Patriots would need to beat Campbellsville 72-59 in the Powell Athletic Center Saturday afternoon.

The win keeps Cumberlands perfect in conference play 18-1, 8-0 MSC. Campbellsville (14-7, 5-3 MSC) could not sustain any offensive momentum and gave up too many easy baskets. Cumberlands hasn't lost since Nov. 12 when they were beaten by then-No. 2 Union University.

"We didn't shoot the ball well, but we got beat because we didn't play defense," said Coach Ginger Colvin. "They're obviously a good team as their record would indicate. But, we're a good team too and I hope we continue to improve."

With Cumberlands leading 53-38, Chelsea Craig scored five of her eight points and a putback by Megan Isaacs closed the gap to a manageable 53-49. But UC went on an 11-3 run and got the working lead it needed to close out the game.

Cumberlands used a 7-0 run 11 minutes into the game to separate to 21-12 lead. But, CU put together it's own run to close the gap to 21-19. The Lady Tigers committed three of their 10 first-half turnovers on the next three trips down the floor and UC led 26-21.

Chelsea Craig and Katie Allen hit four free throws in the last minute of the opening half to close the gap to 32-30.

Lauren Wombles led all scorers with 23 and 12 rebounds. She was joined in double figures by Dace Bicane (10), Jade Howard (17) and Haley Ratliff (10).

"Lauren Wombles. I can't say enough about her," said Colvin. "She plays within herself, can shoot, defend and dish it when she's covered."

Courtney Clifton led CU with 16 and Mackenzie Lee had 11. Clifton also had 10 boards. Campbellsville shot 14 percent for the arc and only 31 percent overall, while Cumberlands hit 67 percent in the second half and 45 percent for the game.

The Lady Tigers will kick off the second half of the conference schedule on Thursday by hosting Shawnee State. Tipoff at 6:00. The game will be broadcast over university radio (88.7). A link for listening on the computer can be found at www.campbellsvilletigers.com,
