NEW ALBANY, Ind. – A back-and-forth match went the way of Indiana University Southeast Thursday night as Campbellsville University's three-match win streak was snapped in a five-set road loss (21-25, 25-21, 16-25, 25-20, 11-15).
The non-conference loss comes two days after Campbellsville racked up a three-set sweep at Lindsey Wilson College to move into a second-place tie in the Mid-South Conference.
In the first set, the Grenadiers took advantage of two CU errors and a pair of kills from Kristyn Maymon to break a 5-5 tie. Campbellsville never closed the four-point margin, as IUS took a 25-21 victory to start the match.
IUS was looking at a 2-0 lead after leading for most of the second set. The Lady Tigers trailed, 14-7, but rallied to even the score, 19-19, with a kill from Laura DeGear. CU gained the lead off an attack by Kelly Moyer. The two kills sparked a 7-2 rally for Campbellsville to even the match with a 25-21 second set win.
The third set consisted of three early lead changes before IUS began to pull away with a 7-1 run en route to a 25-16 win. However, Campbellsville controlled set four from the start. Moyer set the tone with a kill on the first point and sealed the win with the 25th point in a 25-20 win.
It was the second-straight year CU forced a fifth set at IUS, but also the second time in as many years IUS pulled off the upset at home.
CU rallied back from a 7-3 deficit to flip the court with an 8-7 lead. The Lady Tigers gained an 11-9 lead, but did not score again, as Emily Knight and Coral Maybrier combined for four of the Grenadier's next six points to seal the win and avenge an August loss at Campbellsville.
Sara Schum led all players with 19 kills for IUS, while Rinata Aisena and DeGear had 11 and 10 kills for CU. Jackie Schweiger led CU in assists with 28. Kira Stewart assisted 15 of CU's points.
Campbellsville (18-7) will return to Mid-South Conference play Tuesday, Oct. 16 at the University of the Cumberlands for a 7 p.m. EDT match.
