PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — Campbellsville sealed off a three-set win over Shawnee State Friday night in the first match for the Lady Tigers in a two-day, three-match Mid-South Crossover Tournament.
On paper CU (20-7, 8-3 MSC) and Shawnee (18-9, 7-3 MSC) were about as close as two teams could get. But Campbellsville set the tempo with a 25-14 first-set win and went on for the sweep, 25-14, 25-21 and 25-23 to separate itself from one of the teams with whom the Lady Tigers were tied..
"We played with purpose on every point," said Coach Amy Eckenfels. "Everyone seemed to chip in. It was a joint effort from everyone."
CU went on a 5-1 run in the middle of the first set after a Kira Stewart kill gave CU an 18-11 working margin. The final three points of the set closed out the Lady Bears, 25-14.
Campbellsville gained traction in a nip-and-tuck Set 2 when Stewart rolled over a quick-set kill for a 19-16 lead. CU would score seven of the next 11 points to close out that set as well.
CU was rolling in the third, taking a 24-16 lead on a series of Shawnee errors and a big combo block by the Lady Tigers. But Shawnee scored eight straight and it took a Rinata Aisena kill to salt away a 25-23 win.
Aisena led the team with 11 kills, followed by Kelly Moyer (8), Laura DeGear (5), Haley Bechtel (4), and three each from Daiane Souza and Stewart.
Aisena (2) and Stewart (2) had four of the seven CU service aces. Audrey Sanders, Caitlin Dresing and Bechtel had one each.
Jackie Schwieger (11) and Stewart (16) had all of the team's 27 assists. Dresing led the team in digs with 10, followed by Sanders and Bechtel (8), Aisena, Moyer and Giselle Hernandez (4), Stewart (2) and one each by Schwieger, DeGear and Souza.
Campbellsville gets back in to Crossover action with another important match Saturday (11:00) against Rio Grande and a 1:15 match against Pikeville. Two wins will assure Campbellsville at least a tie for second place in the MSC.
