Volley Tigers sweep Lindsey, tie for second in MSC

COLUMBIA , Ky. — Campbellsville got just what it needed Tuesday night at Lindsey Wilson, a conference win against a top team. The 3-0 win (25-21, 25-23 and 25-18), coupled with Rio's win over Shawnee State, forces a four-way tie for second place in the MSC with everyone now chasing  undefeated Georgetown.

"We played exceptionally well," said Coach Amy Eckenfels. "I think we got a little confidence over the weekend by beating some good opponents. And, the girls really wanted it."

CU, 18-6 (6-2 MSC), had to come from behind in the first set, hold on in the second and plow its way through a third set to secure the victory.

It was a balanced attack with 46 kills and a .387 hitting percentage that ultimately was the undoing for the Lady Raiders, 15-8 (6-2 MSC). LWC had 38 kills and a .293 hitting percentage.

Haley Bechtel led the team with 10 kills and received support from Jana Kortas and Giselle Hernandez with eight each, Rinata Aisena and Laura DeGear with seven apiece and Kelly Moyer with six.

Campbellsville finally drew even at 13-all in Set 1 after trailing most of the way by three points. But three straight errors put Lindsey back in the driver's seat at 16-13.

But down the stretch, CU got a couple of kills by Moyer, a block and an ace by Aisena to force a 20-17 margin that it would not relinquish. Kortas had two kills late in the set.

The Lady Tigers appeared to be in control of Set 2, leading 16-11. But three service errors and a couple of other mistakes allowed LWC to creep to within 24-23 when a controversial call at the out-of-bounds antenna closed CU's lead to 24-23. That's when Hernandez salted the set away with a kill down the line.

Campbellsville gradually pulled away in Set 3, leading 10-7 and 20-11. By Lindsey scored seven of the next eight points to close within 22-17.  Moyer had a kill at 23-17 and three LWC errors sealed the 25-18 win.

Lindsey's Courtney Doyle led everyone in kills with 12. Lady Blue Raider Andrea Taylor had 30 assists, but Kira Stewart (22) and Jackie Schwieger (18) combined for 40 for CU. Caitlin Dresing and Bechtel had four digs apiece and Audrey Sanders three.

The Lady Tigers stay on the road with a 7 p.m. non-conference match Thursday against Indiana University Southeast in New Albany, Ind.
