Lady Tigers back on track with win over Columbia

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - The Lady Tigers bounced back from a heartbreaking loss against No. 22 Bethel University this past weekend, pulling out a home-court victory against No. 21 Columbia College for the second time this season. With 52 total turnovers between the teams, the game was sloppy at times, but Campbellsville University, ranked 13th, pulled out yet another Top 25 win putting them at 6-2 on the season.

"It was a good win coming off such a disappointing loss at Bethel," said CU Head Coach Ginger Colvin. "We had a tough loss there, so I was concerned for the team mentally. We were a little flat the first half, but we knew we needed to rebound and defend, and when all was said and done we did those things. A win is a win."

The first bucket of the game came from sophomore Daizah Kimberland, who would end the half leading the team in scoring with 11 points. Columbia responded with four points of its own, putting them on top. The lead would be the only of the game as CU took charge the rest of the half, but with Columbia close behind. At the two-minute mark, the Lady Cougars narrowed the gap to one point. Four free-throws and an "and-one" from Kimberland boosted the team to a five-point lead (36-31) going into the half.

The second 20 minutes began much like the first with Columbia staying at less than eight points behind. The gap finally widened to 10 points at the 11-minute mark with a made free-throw by Mrashi Karumba, senior from London, England. The guard unleashed 11 points in the half to add to her three from the first, making her the top CU scorer of the night with 14 points.

Junior forward Chelsea Craig and Kimberland both ended the night just behind Karumba with 13 points each. Craig led the team in rebounding (9), Kimberland with seven. Senior guard Mackenzie Lee had nine points and contributed five steals, as did junior Katie Allen.

The night finished with a Campbellsville victory, 73-59. Of Columbia's 59 points, 18 came from Heather English.

"Columbia has a very nice team," said Colvin. "Heather English is one of the best players in the country, in my opinion. We put everyone we had on her tonight and she still had 18 points."

The next Lady Tiger game will be played Thursday at the home of Mid-South Conference opponent, St. Catharine College. Tip off time is set for 6 p.m. EST. To follow the team, go to www.campbellsvilletigers.com.
