COLUMBIA, Mo. — Mackenzie Lee rained in six 3s and scored a game-high 25 points as the Lady Tigers beat No. 21 Columbia College 77-68 Monday night.
Campbellsville University (2-0), ranked 13th itself, nursed a 34-31 lead at half after leading by as many as eight points at the 4:40 mark before intermission.
"I'm real pleased with our kids and their effort," said Coach Ginger Colvin. "We didn't make some good decision down the stretch, but we weathered it and I'll take this win and run.
Columbia (1-2) slipped ahead 44-43 when Danielle Ingrum hit a 3, but that's the last time the Lady Cougars would lead. Marashi Karumba hit a big 3 for a 53-46 CU lead and then Hayley Hellyer took a charge at the 5:53 mark that led to Courtney Clifton's 3 and a 65-55 lead with 5:12 to play.
Campbellsville built its lead to 14 at 75-61 and then toyed with tit by taking an early-in-the-shot-clock shot, a turnover and an offensive foul. Columbia closed to within 75-68 when Heather English hit her 22nd point, but the Lady Tigers were able to hold CC off with a couple of Lee free throws.
Columbia out-rebounded the Lady Tigers 38-31, but 50 percent shooting from behind the arc (10-20) made up for that.
Clifton added 17 points and three 3s for Campbellsville's only other double-figure scorer. Daizah Kimberland, Clifton and Mary Jehlik all had four rebounds. Katie Allen had nine assists.
The Lady Tigers stay on the road when they travel on Saturday to Huntington (Ind.) University. Tipoff at 7 p.m. EST. The game will be broadcast over university radio (WLCU 88.7). A link for listening on the computer can be found at www.campbellsvilletigers.com.
