GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- The Lady Tigers seem to be unstoppable after beating yet another Top-25 team and Mid-South Conference rival, No. 6 Georgetown College. The team is now 5-0 in MSC play and 8-2 on the season as they await national rankings next week.
"It was a must win today, we had to have it," said head coach Ginger Colvin. "National polls come out on Tuesday and we wanted to make sure we stayed right there in the thick of things. This is an unbelievable conference and Georgetown has a great team. Anytime we can get a little bit ahead of the rest of these teams we have to do it.
"That was the best effort our kids have had all year. Chelsea Craig was sick and Daizah Kimberland came in and played great along with Hayley Hellyer. It was a total team effort. We played with intensity, played hard, and just outworked them. We out-rebounded Georgetown and that's what we have to do. I'm really, really proud of them."
Georgetown came out strong at the start of the half, putting up the first basket after winning the tip. The CU Lady Tigers answered with a two-point basket to tie the score, but GC's Kourtney Tyra helped her team take the lead again with her first 3-point basket of the half, three more to follow from the junior guard throughout the 20-minute period.
Tyra wasn't the only player hot from behind the arc, though. CU's Courtney Clifton immediately hit a 3 of her own to tie the score once again, 5-5. Campbellsville bounced back-and-forth from barely trailing to tying the score for the initial five minutes until a 3 from junior guard Katie Allen finally broke the ice, putting them ahead by one (10-9). Georgetown trailed the rest of the game.
At the end of the period, Mackenzie Lee led Lady Tiger scoring with 10 points, Daizah Kimberland and Clifton behind her with nine points each. The team went into the locker room leading by 19 (51-32), their largest margin of the period.
CU came out dominating the court once again, stretching its lead to 23 points within the first four minutes. With only four seconds left on the shot clock and 11 minutes in the half, Lady Tiger Katie Allen threw up a long-range three-point field goal, apparently creating a stir in the orange and black Tigers. The team responded with a 16-5 run over the next eight minutes, narrowing the gap to eight points.
The next 16 CU points came from the free-throw line as multiple fouls were given. With less than two minutes left on the clock, a free-throw make from Allen helped her to beat her career high for the second game in a row by one point, scoring a total of 16 in the match-up.
Despite Georgetown's Lizza Jonas who put up 16 points in the half to add to her eight from the first (24), Campbellsville was able to pull out an 89-73 victory.
Clifton and Lee ended as the Lady Tiger top-scorers of the night, both with 18 points. Three others also scored in the double-digits including Allen (16), Karumba (12), and Kimberland (11).
Karumba and Kimberland also led the team in rebounds with seven a piece, Allen leading in assists with seven.
Free-throw makes were a key contributor to the team's success, as the Lady Tigers shot over 80 percent (18 for 22) as opposed to Georgetown, which shot barely 70 percent (19 for 27).
The Lady Tigers will take nearly two weeks off after a busy month of games before their next home game against Wilberforce and then traveling to Puerto Rico for a couple of international match-ups. Tip-off time for the Wilberforce game is set at 5 p.m. EST on Friday, Dec. 14. To follow the team, go to www.campbellsvilletigers.com.
