PULASKI, Tenn. - Campbellsville pounded out 11 hits in game one of a
two-game set Friday evening, but could manage but two safeties in the
nightcap and finished Day 1 of the Martin Methodist Meltdown 1-1.
In the first game,
Alyssa Barker clobbered a two-run homer to center in the second inning and
Kristin Benton a two-run double in the third to boost CU to its 9-1, five-inning win over Freed-Hardeman.
Barker, the designated player, also drove in a run in the third with a one-out single.
Emma Napier had a three-hit game, picking up a double and two singles. Other hits included: singles by
Bailey Dillender (RBI), Sarah Paragon and
Jordan Cornett (RBI);
Jennifer England and
Heather Oakley each had doubles.
Napier scored twice and Cornett, Dillender, England, Benton, Paragon, Barker and Oakley once each.
Taylor Wroe picked up the win with a five-hit effort. She only allowed two hits after the first inning after Freed scored a run on three hits.
Wroe settle in and struck out two and did not walk a batter. She was in a little trouble in the third when she allowed a lead-off single to Sarah Cummings, and, with one out had an 3-1 count on Brittany Yates. But Yates hit a sharp liner to Oakley at first and she doubled off Cummings to end the threat.
The win marked the first time in six years that the Lady Tigers had won an opener, three of those six opening-game losses have come at the hands of Freed-Hardeman.
In game two, Martin Methodist's Chrissy Darnell shut out the Lady Tigers 2-0 on a two-hitter.
The teams were locked up in a scoreless game through 6 ½ innings until Kandace Christopher's two-out double scored the game's only runs.
Emma Napier had a single and
Kristin Benton a double, for CU's only two hits. The Lady Tigers had a runner at second in the fifth and sixth innings, but could not get a timely hit.
In the fifth, Benton's one-out double was followed by
Sara Paragon's base on balls. In the sixth, Napier singled and was followed by a two-out walk to
Bailey Dillender.
Courtney Turpin shouldered the loss, pitching a seven-hitter over six frames. She struck out two and allowed no walks.
Campbellsville, as a team, batted .500 against Freed-Hardeman and .091 against Martin Methodist.
If weather allows, CU is scheduled to play at 11:00 during Day 2 at the Meltdown against Point University and at 3:00 against Martin Methodist.
