ST. CATHARINE, Ky. - Campbellsville fiddled away a first half lead, drew even early in the second half, but could not maintain its momentum, losing to home-standing St. Catharine's Lady Patriots 75-61 Saturday afternoon.
Campbellsville built an early 11-4 lead on 3s by Courtney Clifton (2) and Mackenzie Lee. But CU would not hit another 3 the entire game and shot 27 percent from the field. As a matter of fact, after hitting four of its first six shots, CU went 3-22 the rest of the half. The Lady Tigers hit 16 of its 58 shots from the field.
"We just didn't play very well," analyzed Coach Ginger Colvin. "They didn't run anything we hadn't worked on all week ... maybe we lost a little focus when both our point guards got hurt."
Katie Allen came into the game nursing a bad shoulder and went to the bench in the second half not to return. Mackenzie Lee sprained her ankle in the second half and without her presence SCC started to pull away. Lee did play again.
St. Catharine (21-7, 7-7) sprinted away from a 25-all tie, hitting 4-6 free throws and cashing in on a Lady Tiger lane violation, an offensive rebound and a Campbellsville turnover. CU was out-scored 8-2 the last three minutes of the half.
The Lady Patriots hit four 3s in the second half after missing all five they took in the first half. SCC pushed its lead to 54-45 after a 9-2 run. Janae Howard and Courtney Milam hit 3s with under six minutes to go to hold off any hopes of a CU (18-10, 8-6) comeback.
Lee led Campbellsville with 22 points and was joined in double figures by Clifton's 14. Clifton led CU with nine rebounds.
St. Catharine was led bythe 18-point games by Janae Howard and Milam. Howard had 10 rebounds to lead everyone in that department. Jasmine Gipson also hit double figures with 10 and Kasi Evans had 11.
The Lady Tigers won the rebounding battle 43-39, but turned the ball over 17 times, six more than their opponent.
The Lady Tigers will return to action Thursday when they travel to Lindsey Wilson College in Mid-South Conference play. Tipoff at 7:00. The game will be broadcast over university radio (88.7). A link for listening on the computer can be found at www.campbellsvilletigers.com.
