PULASKI, Tenn. - Campbellsville softball has gotten off to one of its
best starts in recent history, improving to 3-1 after two wins on
Saturday at the Martin Methodist Meltdown.
In the first game,
Kacie Vincent scored in the top of the third when
Jordan Cornett pulled off a suicide bunt for Campbellsville's first run. The Lady Tigers led 7-0 after 4 ½ and held off the Skyhawks for a 14-5 win in six innings.
Vincent reached on an infield single in the third, advanced to second on a bad throw and took third on
Emma Napier's fly out to center. That's when Coach
Shannon Wathen put on the squeeze.
"We had a good opening weekend," said Wathen. "We're hoping to improve and build on our performances. I'm really pleased with our effort."
In the fourth inning Campbellsville plated six more runs, four with
Heather Oakley's first career home run, a grand slam, that staked CU to a 5-0 lead.
Kristin Benton doubled and was advanced by
Sara Paragon's infield single. After
Alyssa Barker was hit by a pitch, the bases were loaded for Oakley.
Later in the inning, Vincent was hit by a pitch and scored on a
Bailey Dillender single.
Taylor Wroe picked up her second win of the young season, pitching a five-hitter over five innings. She struck out two and didn't walk a batter. Wroe had a perfect game going until she allowed five singles in the fourth when Point University plated all five of its runs.
Courtney Turpin came on in relief, earning a save, and shut out the Skyhawks from there.
CU's 13-hit attack was led by Oakley's four RBI. Cornett had three RBI, Napier and Paragon two each. Dillender had three hits.
In game two,
Martina Riney pitched a three-hitter through four innings as she and Turpin combined for a 4-0 shutout win over Freed-Hardeman, a second win over the Lady Lions in 24 hours.
The Lady Tigers scored all their runs with a two spot in the bottom of the first and second innings.
Jennifer England hit a bases-loaded single with Napier, Cornett and Dillender aboard for the first two runs. Dillender and England plated two more with singles in the second. Both Dillender and England had two hits in the game. Cornett closed out the five-hit attack with her single in the first.
Campbellsville is next scheduled to take the field when they meet Cumberland (Tenn.) University in a Tuesday double header set for a 2 p.m. start.
