DECATUR, Ala. - When you don't score runs you don't win many ball games.
Campbellsville went 13 innings before they could push across a score
and it caused them to split their first two games on the opening day of
the Alabama Arctic Blast, hosted by Shorter College.
In game one, 9th-ranked Shorter scored on passed ball in the bottom of the seventh to edge the Lady Tigers 1-0.
CU (4-3) could manage but three hits, all singles by
Emma Napier, Kristen Barker and
Kacie Vincent. The Lady Tigers loaded the bases in the first and stranded runners in the second and fourth frames.
Shorter had eight hits off starter
Courtney Turpin.
Martina Riney came in in relief and made three pitches in the seventh, the third being a passed ball scoring the only run Shorter would need.
In game two, Campbellsville (5-3) trailed 2-0 after 6 1/2 but tacked on three runs in the bottom of the seventh to hold off Tennessee Wesleyan 3-2.
CU outhit Wesleyan 12-5, led by a three-hit game by freshman Kristen Benton. Napier and
Jordan Cornett had two-hits with solo safeties recorded by
Jennifer England,
Heather Oakley,
Alyssa Barker and
Kacie Vincent.
A double by
Bailey Dillender plated Vincent and Napier in the bottom of the seventh and then Benton's single scored Cornett for the winning run.
Taylor Wroe went the distance, allowing five hits, including a double and a triple.
Campbellsville will take on Lee University (3:00) and Bryan College (5:00) Friday on Day 2 of the Arctic Blast.
