WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - The Lady Tigers started slow and never really
gained any traction, losing 79-60 to 8th-ranked University of the
Cumberlands on Saturday.
Committing 10 first-half turnovers to only four by U of C, Campbellsville dug itself a hole and Lauren Wombles was happy to throw dirt in on top of it. Wombles scored 16 first-half points to lead the Lady Patriots (25-3, 14-2) to their 33-24 lead.
"We came out, missed a few open lay-ups and got back on our heels and played scared the rest of the way," said Coach
Ginger Colvin. "We didn't play good defense and when you're soft against a team like this, you're going to get embarrassed like we did today."
CU inched to within one (9-8) in the first half, but Cumberlands went on an 8-0 run from which the Lady Tigers never recovered.
In the second half, the Lady Patriots threw in two 3s and a deuce during the first two minutes and pushed out to a 41-26 advantage. With 11:41 to go they led 56-33.
"We didn't put together any of our game plan today," continued Colvin. "We're going to go back home, practice, and try to get things turned around. It was a very poor effort after a very good effort on Thursday."
Campbellsville (19-11, 9-7) lost just about every battle, shooting (44 to 38 percent), rebounding (35-25) and turnovers (20-12). CU made one 3 and Cumberlands made four.
Wombles led all scorers with 26. She was joined in double figures by Vernisha Moss 14) and Haley Ratliff (14) and Jade Howard (10).
Campbellsville was led by
Keisha Compton's 18 points.
Mackenzie Lee had 14 and
Courtney Clifton 11.
One interesting tidbit, the 23 for 23 free throw shooting by the Lady Tigers tied an NAIA record for highest percentage of free throws in a game (20 or more), a record also set by Campbellsville in February of 1992 against Georgetown (23 for 23). Two other teams share the record, Sterling Kansas (28 for 28) and Mount Mary, South Dakota (20-20).
Campbellsville will earn the fourth seed in the MSC tournament and will play a Thursday afternoon game at 4:00 against St. Catharine.
The Lady Tigers will be the No. 4 seed in the Mid-South Conference Tournament set to tip off Thursday in Frankfort. The tournament games will be broadcast over university radio (88.7). A link for listening on the computer can be found at www.campbellsvilletigers.com.
